According to the census of 1880 seven
tenths of the church members of the
United States are women. Will this be
'the proportion in heaven?
Mr. A. R. N. Folgex of this place has
a hog with three toes growing out at the
first joint of of each fore foot. We have
never before seen such a freak in nature.
'Tyre- Glenn, aged 82 years, committed
suicide in Greenville county on last
Fridey, by drowning himself in a tub of
water. Domeotiu trouble was the cause.
Lou Goodlett, colored, was committed
to jail at thisaplace last Saturday by Trial
Justice John 0. Davis, to await trial at
the Januiary term of Court. on the charge
of assault and battery with intent to kill.
There are many partridges in this sec
tion, and we have several sportsmen and
several good bird dogs in our town. The
resultis: a good trade for our merchants
in ammunition and a slight decrease in
the number of birds.
The fleecy cotton rolls through our
town every day t-3 Greenville and the
railroad toww in our county. Our
own merchants are buying considerably,
but it is taken mostly on account, only
a part being paid in cash.

voted the same kind of a ticket in more
than one box on election daiy. Hie was
promptly arrested by J. M. Stewart, a
Deputy Xtate Constable, carried before
Juisticei Newbery, and reqpired to give
bond for his appearance at the next term
of court.
Samuel Hauscl, colored, was commit
ted to jail at this pla1ce, by Trial Justico
Johnston on last Saturday, to await trial
at the January term of Court, on the
charge of grand larceny. Th'le warrant
was sworn out by Edward Jenhains, col
ored, who alleges that Hiascal stole cloth
ing from him to the value of over twenty
dollars.
Mrs. Mary Sanders, wife of A. (G. Sau
ders, died of typhoid fever at her home
near this pla1ce on the 3d instant, after a
lingering illness. She leaves a husband
and one child besides other relatives and
friends to mourn her death. She had
been a member of the Porter's Chapel
Methodist church for 15 years.
Several tracts of land were sold at this
place last Moncey, saleday, by the Clerk
and Sheriff. The prices realized were
about fifty per cent of what lands have
been bringing in this county for several
years past. This falling off in the price
of land is attributable to bad crops for
the last two years and the scarcity of
money in consequence thereof.
The Trustees of the Walker School
will meet at Dr. S. W. Clayton's house
on the 13th instant, at 11 o'clock A. M.
All the rustees of said school are earn
estly requested to be at this meeting, as
important businosai will be considered.

Mr. J. M. Welborn inst his phoket
book, containing $27.25 last spring, Re
eomntlp Steve Ladd, who was plowing in
wheat for Mr. Welhorn, plowed up the
pocket book and every cent of the money
was recovered1 undamaged. Ini scatterinag
snanure on the ground Mr. Welborn had
dropped his p)ocket book and had no0 idea1
where or how he lost it until its rather
singular discovery. This is what might
he called good luck.
Reverend Barnett S. Gaines, died at
his resi'denco in the towvn of Central, in
this County, on the 31st day of October
last, aged, nearly sixty four years. Mr.
Gaines lad Agen at membel)fr of the Meth
odist church fity years and a p)reacher of
the Gospel for thirty three years. Hie
supplied the Mission in this County for
a number of years and was a zealous
and faithful worker in his Master's Vine
yard. He died rejoicing in the bright
hope of an immortal crown of glory in
heaven. He leaves a large family of
children and grand children besides a
large circle of other relatives and friends
to mourn his death, lHe was the Uncle
of Mr. J. 0. Thompson of Tu SENTrINEL.

Mr. Joh1 A. Easley of this County
has a double barrelled shot gun that to
125 years old. It was brought to to this
County by Mr. Pginsett and bought by S
Mr. Easley's father, the late General
Easley, at Mr Poineett's sale. It was first
a flint ant steel gun, but has been chang
ed to shot with caps. The gun was made
by Joseph Manton.
In Laurens County there was not 1
a sigle Repul)lical ticket polled, and 1
in Abbeville County there were only
three.

colored, to jail for 30 days for steal
ing meal from the house of William j
