The True Story of the Cuckoo.
Our oorrespondontt whoso interesting
rolmunicatirl on cuckoo lore ap)tearedt
last week is at fault in stating that the ac
young cuckoo turns out its fellow-nest- s
lings from a ltve of supremacy, and that
the young birds expelled are smaller than ti
itself. Being usualiv hatched before the cl
cuckoo, they are gwerally of equal size,
and rather larger than the intruder; and el
their expulsion is necessary for his due (d
nourishment by the miniaturo foster It
p)areit. In fait, when, as sometimes
hiapIons, two cttek>os are hatched in one
nest., they tideavor each to expel the tt
other; and in one ease observed by Herr
Adolph Muller, atal described in I)er r
oio/o//isehi: Gaite,i for October, 1868,
the smaller succeded in expelling the
larger. But. we will let Mrs. Blackurn t
relate her own account of what she saw:
The nex-t (which we watchedi last June,
