olnisof your valuaable pa-.
. the first Wace will say, I was
orm a"d raIsed in Pickens District,- left
there 1P 1870, came to Alabama, from there
to Louisiana, wiere I remained a few
week* t~ne to Missouri, there I stoppd
about two years, after which time I camb
to the "Lone Star" State, and hk%% lived
in Hill Cbouny ever since. eforie leaving
My ord'home on Six Mile we could hear a
gi'iat many glowing accounts of Texas
what a'man could do ou a farm. I came
"try my hand," and try it was, instead of
making a bale of cotton per acre, the aver
age for oy first year was about 1 * ef a
bale to the acre-abouv15 bushels of corn,
and about 8 bushels of wheat to the acre.
The next year's crop was a little better;
the next, almost a failure. The great draw
back to Texas is the dry weather. We have
as good land here as I ever saw in any of
your riVst bottoms. When the drought
sets in, which is in May or June, we often:
have no more rain until late in the Fall.
There are a great many persons who have
to haul 'water two and threO miles on whg
ons-out stocle often Aie fo+ water. We
live In a prairie portion of the country, and
have to haul fire wood about, 8 miles. Every
thing is high during the dry years, and
when we happen on a seasonable year,
what farmers raise can scarcely be sold for
anything-0+n come3 down to as low as
14 cents per bushel-labor is high, a la:
boring man can make some money here,
but it takes it. all to keep him going. We
have good Ahools, many churches and
good society. Land is worth 1from $3 to
$20 per Wre, owing to the -improvements.
One great renson why so many persons re
main'here is, they spend all they firtve to
get here, and never save enough to get
away on. If I ad time, would write you
more, 1 eonld write all day and then not.
get through telling about Texas. I hope
this will not find its way to your waste
basket, but prove interesting to some of
your subscribers (myself being one) in the
columns of your invaluable paper.
Respectfulyt,
W. S. Bocas.
