BALLou's MONTHLY MAGAZINE FOR
JANUARY.-The January number of
this favorite magazine is a sample of
.what it will be the whole year.-lght,
attractive, and a family friend, to be
' welcomed in every household, and
read with pleasure by old and young.
There is nothing like it in this coun
try; for it is a marvel of cheapness
and good taste, with the most choice
variety of reading matter that can be
f9und in any serial in this country.
Just try it for a year. Published by
Thomes & Lalbot, 23 Hawley Street,
Boston, Mass., at only 81.50 per an,
~num, post paid. A sample copy of the
January number will be sent to any
address, on receipt of ten cents, by the
publishers; then, If you wish to con.
tinue It will only be necessary to re -
mit $1.40 for the balance of the year.
H01MIcIDE.-'Our Coroner received
notice on last Saturday morning that
a negro m~ named Phil flallums had
been kille -at the house of Al. Ariall,
a colored man living near Liber'ty
Station, in the lower part of this
Codnty. Hie, at once, with the Sher,.
1ff, hastened to the scene of the killing,
organixbd a jury and commenced a
-thorough an d searching examination
of the whole affair. it appears that
on Friday night last, Al. Arlail had a
party at his house. and invied the
colored population of tho neighbor
bood geperally. Whiskey flowed
pretty freely, and soon a -number be
came noisy, boistrous and quarrelsome,
and among these was the deceased.
As is generally the end in all stich
oases, some must have a figlit. It
commenced, and become general, and
during the melee Phil Hallums was
stabbed in several places. Ho was eut
on the right shoulder blado and in the
right breast, one thrust probed his
left breast, near tho regrion of the
heart; this lainst was fatal, ind the ne
gro fell, dying without a groan.
Nothing could bo elicited by the Cor%
onor's inquost to fix the cutting on
any particular person with any dogree
of certainty. N one seemoed to know
who did the killng or commenced the
fuss. Circumstancos, however, point.
ed pretty strongly to the guilt of
Chess Hendricks, Bill Hendricks and
John Chappel. These three were ac
cordingly arrested on a warrant from
the Coroner, and lodged in jail, where
they now are awaiting further devel
opments. One good old-fashion hangs
ing would, we think, have a healthy
effect upon the morals and quietude or
our County.
Since writing the above we learn
thrt Jim Long was arested on Tuesday
last, on a warrant from Trial Justico
Taylor, charged with the killing of'
Phil Hallums and was committed to
jail. We learn that Al Aariail, at
whose house the killing took place,
an,l who was strongly suspicioned of'
having committed the deed, ha3 fled
to parts unknown. Wess Hadden and
Pink Moony, witnesses in the case,
were on the same day committed, in
default of hail.
FAIR WARNING.
A LL persons indebted to the undersigned,
ceither by Note or Account,'will confer a
favor, and obviate the expense and unpleas,
antness of having judginant obtained against
them, by scttling the mane at once, as the
business of the Old Firm MusT be settled.
Respectfully,
