A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER's RETURN,
OR THlE ILOST CAUSE.-A magnificent
picture, beautiful in design and artistic
in execution. It rep resents a Confead
erat, soldier after the war returning
to his home, which ho finds ruined by
bhot and shell, looking lonely and des
olato. in front of the ruined cottage,
telling a dad tale of the misiries of war,
are two graves with rude crosses, on
one of which some friendly hand has
hung a garland. The graves are over
hiung by a weeping willow, in the
shadow of which stands the retur'ned
soldier with bowed head, as if think
in g of the past. To the right the
calm river and rising moon indicate
peace and rest. The stars soen
through the trees represent the South.
ern Cross, draped over the graves, an
emblem of the Confederate flag as
well as a harbintrer of brighter days
to come. The floodof glorious moon
~light streaming through the trees and
reflecting on the peaceful river adds
to the sentiment and beauty of the
scene and its surroundings. No de

VEGETINE
For Bilious, Remitent, and In
Or what is more gognnly termed Fever and
Ague, with pain In the loins and through the
back, and Iddescribable chilly sensation dovoi
the spine, an Irresistible disposition to yawn,
pain In the eyes, which is increased by mov.
lag them, a blue tinge In the skin, and great
listlessness and debility, VUZTINZ is a safe
and positive remedy. It is compounded ex
clusively from the juices of carefully selected
barks-and herbs, and so strongly concentrated
that it is one of the greatest cleansers of the
blood that is or can be put together. Vz
ORiN does not stop with breaking Chills
and Fever, but it extends its wonderful in,
fluence into every part of the human system,
and entirely -eradicates every taint of disease.
Vegetine does not act as a powerful cathartic,
or debilitate the bowels and cause the patient
to dread other serious complaints whiAn hmust
inevitably follow; but it strikes at the root of
disease by purifying the. blood, restores the
liver and kidneys to healthy action, regulates
the bowels, and assists Nature in performing
all the duties that devolve upon her.
Thousands of invalids are suffering to day
from the effects of powerful purgative nos
trums, frightful quantities of quinine, . Snd
poison doses of arsenic, neither of which ever
ave, or ever could, reach the true cause of
their complaint.
Vegetine
works in the human system In perfect bar,
mony with nature's laws, and while it is pleas
ant to the taste, genial to the stomach, and
mild in its influence on the bowels, it is ab
solute in its action on disease, and is not a
vile, nauseous Bitters, purging the invalid
into false hope that they are being cured.
VEGETINE is a purely Vegetable Medicine,
compounded upon scientific principles. It is
indorsed by the best physicians where its
virtues have been tested, is recommended
only where medicine is needed, and is not a
mixture of cheap whiskey sold under the
cloak of Bitters.
GIVES, HEALTH,STRENGTIH & APPETITE
My daughter has received great benefit
from the use of Vegetine. Her declining healt i
was a source of great anxiety to all of her
triends. A few bottles of the Vegetine re
stored her health, strength. and appetite.

POLICE TESTIMONY.
BOsTON, November 18,1877.
H. R. STEVENS, Esq.-Dear Sir: During
the past five years I have had ample oppor
tunity to judge of the merits of VEr.ETINE.
My wife has used it for complaints attending
a lady of delicate health, with more benefi
cial results than anything else which she
ever tried. I have given it to my childlren
under almost every circumstance attending a
large family, and always with marked bene
fit,. I hove taken it myself with such great.
benefit that I cannot find words to ex
press my unqualified appreciation of its
good ness!.
While performing my duties as - Police
Officer in this city, it. hais been nmy lot, to fall
in with a great. deai of sickness. I unhesi
tat ingly recommend VEG ETIN E, and I never
knew of a case where it did nmot. prove alli that
was claimed for it. Particularly ini cases of
debilitated or impoverished st at e of the blood,
its effects are really wonderful; and, for all
complaints arising from an impure stat.e of
the blood, it appears to work like a charm;
and I do not believe there are any circum
sinnces uinder wIhich Vegetine canm be used
with injurious results; and it will always atf
ford me pleasure to give any further infor,
niationi as to wvhat I know about Vegrine.

This Sarsaparilla is a combination of
vegetable alteratives - Stillingia, Man
drake, Yellow Dock - with the lodides
of Potassium and Iron, and is the most
efficacious medicine yet knowsn for
the.diseases it is intended to cure.
Its ingredients are so skil fully comn
bined, that 'the full alterative effect of
each is assured, and wvhile 'it is so mild
as to be harmless oven to children, it is
still so effectual as to purge ont from the
system those impurities and corruptions
which develop into loathsome disease.
Tlhe reputation it enjoys is derived
from its cures, and the confidence which
prominent _phy'sicians all over the coun
try repose mn it, prove their experience
of its usefulness.
Certificates attesting its virtues have
accumulated, and are constantly being
received, and as many of these cases are.
publicly known, they furnish convincing
evidence of the superiority of this Sar
saparilla over every other alterative
mnedIieme. So generally is its superi

we need do no more than to assure the
public that the best qualities it has over
possessed are strictly maintained.
