The Russians Storm and Carry Lovatz
LONDON, Sept. 4.-An official Rus
sian bulletin, issued at St. Petersburg,
announces that Generals Meretinksy
and Skobeloff assaulted and carried
Lovatz yesterday, killing and cap
turing many Turks.
The Times' leading article of yes
torday and to day, are devoted to
showing the noodlessness of the pros
out war, its oxcessivo cotilines in
men and money far outwoighiuig its
poasibility for good, and the danger
of eventual Russian failure, from all
of which the Times concludes that
the present moment is propitious for
intervention, and that Gormany and
England ought to take the initiative
to bring about a truce.
LONDON, Sept. 4.-The special cor%
respondent of the Daily News at Po
redin, under date of Septombor 1, tolo
graphs as follows: I rodo over the
battle field when the Porlisat affair
was over. The Turks left voy low
wounded, and only about 300 dead on
the field. Their losses could be bet,
ter judgod by the nmber of kniap
sacks with which the ground was
strewn. In front of' the Russian
trenches, half way between Perliat
and Zgaiinoe, the Turkish dead were
lying so close that they might have
shaken hands with the Russians lying
inside. It was a desperate attack
and a desperate resistanco. The at
tack seems to h)avo been well direct
ed. It was made so suddenly and
with such violence that the R ussian
redoubt was taken almost by surprise
the first time, 1t was mn faict taken
almost boforo General Zotoff know
the attack had bogun.
From a Russian point of vIow 1
look upon the whole system of fight
ing in fortificaitionis as a mistaken one;
it would have boen much better for
General Zotoff to have retreated and
drawn the Turks out into the open
country, where their inaptness at ex,
ocuting manwuvres on the field of
battle, would have put them at great
disadvantage with the well drilled
Russian troops.
L(T.-A man named Joel B. New
ton, of about fifty years of age, and
an inhabitant of the corner of this
county, says the Anderson Intelli
gencer ot the 30th nilt., was commit
ted to jail in this p)lace last week
upon the charge of having commit-.
tedl a vile assault upon one of his
own daughters, and for having at
tempted to commit the same upon
another daughter. Newton was
originally from Pickens county, but
has resided at his present hmome for
fifteen or twenty years, and has been
a well to-do and kindly thought of
citizen during that period. His wife
has been a lunatic confined in the
Asylum for -some time since, but
there have been no indications of in-.
sanity on) is part..
General Grant's reluctance to leave
England for Franco grewv out of the
fact that he had been told that there
was no letter "w" in the French lan
guage, and where there was no "w"
there conld be no whiskey, of course,
be was finally pursuaded, though,
Ihat theq could spell it as old man
Weller did bis name-with a "v."
After the battle of Plovna, the body
