Friday the colored school at thuis lace,
under the chmarga of WV. ID. Jenkinis,
colored, closed the exoroipos of the
"Iree term" by a parade, din ner, ex
afnifhation, etc. A bout 11 o'ock,
the school formed in proccasi by
two's, the boys in front and the girls
following, and paraded th e principal
streets of our town, headed by a fife
and drum, with the Hlampton colors
(a red piece of. flannel) floating above
them at the end of a rude flag statff.
We counted one hundred in the pros~
+ osion. They halted in front of thc
Court Uouse, whore, fronm tho steps,
they wore addressed by Messrs. Tfay..

marched back to the school soom,
where, after din nor, the Oxamination
too place. By invitation, we, in

profieleey, &c. Josso Ferguson, a
lad about fourteen years old, was
awarded the priwo for the best speech.
After the distribution of prizes the
school was dismissed and each wended
their wi home. We aro glad to see
that our colored friends arc taking
such an interest in education. It is the
miain-spring to every entorpriso and
Euccoss in life, and is their main hopo
for the future.
Mrs. Dr. J. W. King, was danger
ously burt by the explosion of a kero
seno lamp, at Floronco, S. C., on the
ovening of tho 30th ult.
