A "ifmpton Rifle Club" was organized at
B&Py Station, on Saturday, the 16th inst.
with th'e following officers: Captain, T. W'
RPu0ll; 1st Lieutenant, Eliss Day; 2nd Lied.
tenant, M..W. Ford; 8d Lieutenart, 0 W.
Bowen; Orderly Sargeant, W. C. Verrell.
The largest sweet potatae we have iseen this
yesr, wan brought to our office by Mr. Jere
miah Looper, some eight or ten days ago. It
weighed over three pounds, and was of the
yetllw yam variety. We presume Mr. Looper
lie them much larger by this Lithe.
NOT AN IrDXP2MDNNT.-Dr. P. D. Cureton
submits his claims to the office of School
Commlssiener, to the Democrats In the ap_
proaching primary election, and lie will,
therefore, not be an Independent candidaie.
See his announcement eisewhcrc.
HAIu.STOR.-A heavy hail storm passed
over a portion of this County, North and East
of this place, cn Friday evening last, damage
ing fodder very materially. There was also a
heavy rain which caused the streams to ris
A and overflow their banks.
We regret that our friend, R. A. Bowen.
Esq., has been again prostrated by the rising
or his hip, caused by an old gun shot wound,
received in the war. le is now improving
and will soon be out. again- Ile is one of the
sosindest and hardest working Democrats in
the County, and his services at this time could
4 not well be dispensed with.
. .. -____
It wil be seen, by reference to the proceed
ings of the County Democratic Executive
Committee, that the primary election, for a
candidate for School Comnmissioner. to supply
t!he vacancy on the ticket, caused by (lie death
o f alr. M. 8. IIendricks, will be held on Bat
uirday the 7th day of October, next. We
trust the members of the clubs will turn out
generally, and case their votes for the man or
their choice.
Mr. 0. WV. D.orr iniformts us thati. there was

IIARDECUEs-Theo good people of Central
Station and vicinity, we are informed, propose
to haave atibgarbecue some time during (lie
campaign, and expect to have the lHon. B. 11.
lill and General Gordon, of Georgia, withI
thtem on the occasion. Eaisley is not to be
out. done, and a barbecue of no small impor
lance is tailked of at that place. This is the
right spirit, and if the ball is kept iu the right
nmot ion, there is no doubt of success.
llUNNAwAY S0aAPr.-Thae other day Messrs.
.Hnigood & Alexander's team of mules, while
being driven through Main Street, and when
opposite the Court House, wit hout any ap
parant cause, dashed off at a furious rate,
creating much excitement as they passed
along. When opposite the Livery Stables,
where they are usually stilled, they turned
in. but the driver, seeing that a terrible
smash up would be inevitable, reined them off
arid endeavored to keep them in the street.,
* but before he could turn them into the street,
the saddle mule ran against a tree, the dou.
ble-tree and tonigue of the wagon were broken;
and Jack, the colored driver, landed about fif'
teen feet off, flat of his back. Strange to say
-neither Jack or the mules were hurt, and (lie
only damage done was that of breaking the
double tree and tongue of the wagon.
