A San Jose Mystery- I f TIio following is from tlio San Jose JHorcnry, ot January (3: Ono of the strangest and mo6t pc ! culiar cases over evoked from real life, or from tlio fancy of tho novelist, was brought to our notice on Wednesday. The story, as far as it goes, is true in everv particular. and onlv */ I I */ furnishes anotlior opportunity for ( tho inquiring mind to aek: "Of what j manner of tnen nro we?" About ( three in nths since there came to the roBideneo of Dr. A. C. Hooker, on San Fernando street, two young men, twin brothers, named Alonzo and Lorenzo Pike. Tlieir appearance was prepossessing, they seemed to possess more than lho average air.ount of intelligence, and they wore aliko in every particular?dices, height, | features, voice and manner. Their \ homo was in Iowa, but latterly tlicy had resided in Oregon, where they had engaged in teaching 6chool. The room was taken, and though rent should have been ] aid in advance they did not oiler to pay, and nothing on that subject was mentioned until the week wns up, \v!ien the doctor paid thorn a business visit.? They informed him that they had no money, but woi o expecting sonic in a few days. At tho end of another week thormattor was again broached and the same answer returned.? Things ran along in this way for some two months. No money v as furthcoming, and tho doctor, who is charitably disposed, and who withal saw that SOMETHING WAS TROUBLING TIIEIK MINDS, did not press I hem. Tiicir clothes began to look shabby, and cheeks to grow hollow and emaciated. Tlie doctor at length paid them visit at their room, in order, if possible, to learn tl.o cause. lie asked them if they bad enough to eat. An aflirx limtivn tfllD l-ntiti'iinz-l 'PI " "O i VMUIICU. JL HO) said that they were amply provided fur and wanted for nothing* Days passed, which told perceptibly upjn their appearance, llo was not satisfied with their statement, and again and again endeavored to draw them out so as to befriend thorn, but tho unvarying reply was that thoy were provided for and needed no assistance. One day one of them wae> taken sick. Tho doctor learned the fact and asked hia wifn tn inolrn toust. She did so, and lie took it nt> to their room, but neither \vtinted it. The brother, who was ablo to be around, said thai ho understood the other's condition and everything would come out all right. So mat* tors ran on until a week ago, when both eomnipnnod to l;pnn 11?^S ,, W.W.. . will. Tito doctor asked the cause, and was told that they wanted to be loft alone. 1 On the second visit one brother told the doctor that the other, who was abed, was UN DICK THE INFLUENCE OF SPIRITS, 1 and absolute quiet and solitudo was necessary. A friend <>f tho Doclor'a, on Sunday last, who bad a slight ac. i quaintance with tho brothers, was j informed of the state of a (lairs, and he went uj> to see thorn, in order, it i possible, to arrive at their condition, ( etc. He was informed that tliey were 1 fill : <r 111 nurl no * ?? ? ?.? mi c?o IIIV*u\jy ?iib i conccrnclj they expected a remit* 1 tancc in a low days. For some days ' H-uviuusly the unwell one bad been n an unsconscious state, and now t ho other appeared to be in a similar fl situation. Yesterday Dr. Hovet was t jailed in, who said they would die 1 unless something was done. l)r. * Hooker then hunted up Dr. Cory, the county physician, and at noon 1 they were taken to the Infirmary, ! still in an unconscious etato. Whether they will live or dio is an open question. After their departure Dr. Hooker found a letter in their room i from their mother in Iowa, dated Juno 8. She wrote cheerfully, and said bhe expected them homo in June next. The ca6e is a very strange one. Thoie was nothing in their looks or manner lo indicate insanity, and on all subjects except religious or spir** itual i nos they conversed rationally.
