A great deal of "excitement pre vailed on Pinckney street tills morn ing about 10 o'clock when the resi dents were Jostled from their regular routine of domestic duties by cries for help, which came from tho back yard of Mrs. D. P. Andrews' home. Quickly c crowd of excited neigh bors gathered in responso to the cries and found that a tragedy was .ibout to happen In their midst if prompt assistance wore not rendered. Mrs. D. F, Andrews, who had a few moments before been sweeping some trash about an old well,, stepped too near the curbing, and the loose dirt gave way, precipitating her into the well, a depth of some ton feet. The well has not been used for years and was llllod to within ten feet of tho top. .Mrs. Ida Wardlaw, in an attempt to rescue Mrs. Andrews, lost her bal ance, and also fell into the well, and her arm was broken. W. R. Broom, with much coolness, rescued the ladles, but was Just about overcome from tho effects of inhaling the irrespirable gases which were pouring from the well like smoke. Mrs. Andrews, who re mained in tho woll and gas for some minutes, was asphyxiated aad did not recover consciousness for over an hour. She suffered no broken bones, but is dreadfully shaken up and bruised about the shoulders and back. Tho physicians in attendance state that with no internal injury manifested, Mrs. Andrews will re cover In. a few days. The discovery of the theit of $500, 000 worth of Jewels from the coun try home of Enrico Caruso was re enacted to-day for the benefit of tho score of detectives who are trying to solvo the mystery. Mrs. Caruso, her sister-in-law and tho servants acted and spoke, so far as they could remember, just as they did last Tuesday night after the ring ing of tho burglar alarm led to the revelation that the jewels had dis appeared. The characters in the melodrama were even dressed as they woro on Tuesday night. The rising of tho curtain reveals Mrs. Caruso and Mrs. Park Benjamin, Jr., in the sitting room. Mrs. Caruso's maid ls' up stairs, and George Fitzgerald, the chauffeur, is out in the driveway leading to tho house. sots orr Burglar Alarm. A detective sets off the burglar alarm in the jewel casket in Mrs, Ca ruso's boudoir. Mrs. Caruso and Mrs. Benjamin start upstairs, then hesitate, GU lik ing the burglars may be around tho houso. .Mrs. Caruso tries to tele phono to the gatehouse to warn Fitz gerald. There is no answer. Fitz gerald rushes into the room. "I heard that bell," he cries. "Who touched that box?" "Heavens!" cries Mrs. Caruso. "My Jewels!" Fitzgerald draws a revolver, runs out and fires two shots in the air. Mrs. Caruso follows. Her maid hur ries out and faints In the arms of hei rn i stress. Finds Jewel Row Fitzgerald runs to the spot in the driveway where he finds the empty jewel case. Curtain. Fitzgerald in tears told detec tives that while he knew they sus pected him, he would not have rob bed such a good employer as Caruso, who paid him $180 a month besides keeping himself and family. The tenor gave him $50 to play poker with when he left for Havana re cently, he said. He suggested a new clue to detec tives by mentioning that shortly af ter the tenor's departure a man in a French uniform, accompanied by a woman, attempted to see Mrs. Ca ruso.
