EXTRAVAGANCE ANO CONCEIT
The man who said that conceit
was ac tho bottom of every extrava
gance know a good deal about lni
.man nature. Kew men would pay $t
for a tie that did liol look as if it
cost $1, and the factory girls in Con
necticut who are buying $300 fur
coats on installments out of a salary
of $ 1 ? a week would care little for
such coals it' tho only placo they ,
could wear them was In an asylum
for Hie blind.
A modern philosopher says,"I con- :
e lude thal dissatisfaction ls a coin- '
mon human ailment, and that I
might as well be unhappy with what
I have i i s unhappy with what 1 can't
a flo i d."
Thousands of Americans are dis
sipating I heir savings in extravagant
purchases, purely through conceit.
And it is truly a blind conceit a
conceit which deceives no one but
the extravagant ones themselves.
When a man goes into a store lo buy
a $1) bat which lie eau alford, and
comes ont with a $lii hal which bas
forced hint lo break into his sav
ings, he does not Impresa the (derk
who sells il or bis friends who soe
him wear lt, bul ho injured them all
and himself also. He has aided in
diverting production from necessities
to non-essentials, he has helped to
keep up prices, and has withdrawn
potential capital from possible usc
in increasing industry. Kor himself
ho has weakened bis defense against
old age. sickness and loss of em- J
ployaient, and depleted his offensive
in the battle for sitcccoss.
Failure to save is too high a price
to pay for the pampering of conceit.
Tho only safety against extravagance 1
lies in thrift and Having. Liberty '
Hoads.war savings stamps and treas- '
ury savings cert! Ilea tes may not I
make a flashy show, but they are
more expressive than any extrava- I
gani possession thal money can buy. j
They afford protection to savings, to
the future and to character, and are
sure roads to possession of the things
really needed and desired.
We have recently hoard several of
our citizens who invested in war sav
ings and thrift stamps state that
they had "cashed In" on those sav
ings. In no instance have wo gotten
a reply to inquiry as to why these
.savings stamps were sold that would
indicate that tho exchange was in
any way necessary. Kully DO per
cent of tho money saved through the
purchase of stamps* of various khuls
calculated to build up a saving habit
luis been thrown away within a few
hours after the evidences of thrift
and savings had been turned back
to the post ellice ?ind cash taken In
exchange. The object of our gov
ernment the instilling of a spirit
of thrift and saving -is being ruth
lessly defeated by those who are at
thc presen I Hmo needlessly "cashing
in" their stamps. Don't quit saving.
Von aro sure lo regret it later.

10(1 i tor Koowoo Courier:
Karly In August I decided to make
a visit to south Carolina. Procuring
a season round-trip ticket, I boarded
the "Sunshine" at Jowett for .Seneca
on the fourth of August, and an hour
by sun tho next morning our train
was crossing the Mississippi Uiver.
Wo stopped for ono hour at Memphis
and thou wore on our way once
more to our old homo. Wo arrived
in Atlanta on Wednesday morning
about :i o'clock. Having two neph
ews in Atlanta, I began to try to
lind thom. Tho lady who attends to
tho ira velors' aid, phoned up to his
house and found Dr. A. D. Hull at
home. Ile is enjoying a splendid
practico as a specialist in tho treat
ment of cancer. I remained ibero for
a couple of days, and then hastened
on to Seneca to see relatives and
friends, and I met not a few of old
friends and relatives. They did not
know mo, nor did I know them.
Walking up tho street at Walhalla
I saw three mon standing together
talking. I walked over to whore
they woro and hold out my hand to
ono of them nnd asked what his
name was. and he said it was W. J.
Stribling. 1 asked Mr. Stribling who
a certain man who was closo by was,
and ho told mo that was S. K. Dendy,
whom I had always known and with
whom I had gono to school in the
days of long ago. I spent several
days In Walhalla and then went back
to Seneca.
1 attended tho Confederate reun
ion ut Bounty Hand Academy, whore
I li rs t wont to school under the tutor
ship of Rev. H.H. Penny and to F.W.
T. Cleveland. The old school house
was gone and a new ono had been
built in its place. Many of the old
marks of my school-boy days were
gone. We bad some line speeches
from Hughs, Stribling and others.
Then dinner was announced, and we
had a sumptuous dinner, such as
that community always affords and !
is famous for. Then wo began to
renew obi friendships, and the
time soon came when wo had to
leave to visit relatives in other sec
tions. I spent a while in Westmin
ster, Toccoa and Franklin county,
nnd then wont on to Atlanta, whore
I again spent a short while with my j
nephews. Hut 1 cut this visit shorter
than I wanted to because of my
groat desire lo visit Chattanooga,
Lookout Mountain and Chickamauga j
Park. ..My visit to these places was
indeed interesting to me. As I stood
on Lookout Mountain und viewed the
many monuments I thought of the
many brave men who died on those
Heids. Then tho great world war
came into my mind, and I thought
of the many boys who died "over
there. I never like to speak of the
great world war, as I drank to the
dregs of it In losing a boy in tho
training camp in December of 1917.
He died of pneumonia.
Mr. Editor, as you know, I arrived
home safely in due course of time,
and having about finished my lotter
to Tho Courier, I will say that I re
linquish any further space that
might be accorded me to Capt. S. K.
Dendy, who writes so interestingly
of his recollections of the past, and
to X. H. Cary, who writes of the
reminiscences of Old Pickens, which
is also vory interesting to mc.
I extend through you, Mr. Editor,
my kindest regards to the pepole of
Oconee, who, though I may bo far
away in body, are very closo to mc.
Respectfully,
John M. Hall.
