WALHALLA, S. C.
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 11)10.
JUST ANOTHER WARNING.
Yes, we are ready to admit that
we aro somewhat "old logy iah" and
probably a hit over-careful about the
rights of others, but we want to
give at least one more warning
against careless or thoughtless driv
ing of automobiles. We have been
warning against carelessness and
thoughtlessness for a long time. So
far no one lias been killed in our
town or in the immediate vicinity,
but Hie fatal accident is going lo
happen yet If auto (?Vivers are not
more careful in their driving und
thoughtful in the matter of giving
warning of their approach.
An accident with a horse or mule
may bo avoided by giving tho driver
of tho animal warning of your car's
approach by uso of horn or other
signal. There are hundreds of
short turns and sharp curves in the
roads of this vicinity where an ac
cident may happen at any moment,
yet there is no need of accidents hap
pening at these places if automobile
drivers will give warning of their
aproach and bring their cars down
to a reasonable speed. Not one auto
II. ibiie driver out of len in this sec
tion ever uses a warning signal. And
il is line that nine times out. of
len ibo signal is not needed. Hui
what uboul (be fatal louth time
that is .ipi io come, when the use of
Ibo signal might prevent a serious,
even fatal, accident?

A l IONA H ''INCIDENT."
Prc diapaichuii front Austin,
Texas, inform us thal a mau named
Shillady was recently taken from his
hotel in that city and rather rough
ly handled, being given a severe
bealing, and being told to make
himself scarce, and quickly, in the
Stale of Texas.
Shlllady's offense was that he wan
mooting with, organizing and preach
ing to the negroes of Texas the doc
trine of social equality, and he made
himself very abnoxious to the com
munity, with the result that he was
given "an urgent invitation" to ab
sent himself from Texas soil, with
the further injunction that it would
bo well for him to make bis abs ?nee
permanent.
Such eases are, of course, regret
table, but they aro also natural con
sequencer, of the folly of a few mis
guided jorsons who misunderstand
conditio)is and do not realize the
peril contained in the advocacy ot
"social equality" between tho races
In this country. At the moment all
such gain the hatred of the white
people, and within a short, time, af
ter negroes have had time to think
over the minter, tho contempt of the
neg! oe? themselv?:. ls no less stroiiR
than tue hatred ol' the whites. And
Ibo misguided fools who preach

being brought about by reason of
some foolish attempts nt "r?gula

by outsiders who know nothing what
ever of the South's great problem.
If Mr. Shillady, as Mary Ovlngtor
states, is "a mau of great import
ance in New York," (hon it is ovi
dent that bo can best serve his own
and others' Interests by staying in
i that section of tho country. The re
cent occurrence in Austin furnishes
ample ovidenco of the fact that. Mr.
Shillady is of no Importance In
Texas, and that bo ts not wanted in
that State.
Nor aro Mr. Shillady, Mary Ovlng
ton or others who think and act as
they do, wanted lu Texas or else
where In tho South." Let them confino
their labors to their own sections.
If they want "social equality, "amal
gamation of the races," otc. they
are welcomo to it In their own homes,
but not In the South.
Ryon ts of a not very distant dato
in Chicago, In New York and in other
sections where negroes have come
(ogelhor In largo numbers from tho
South have proven that "tho South's
problem" becomes "the North's pro
blem" In a limited way. Tho North
at times, in various sections, at
tempts "social equality" and gener
ally ends tho attempt with a liberal
use of tho bludgeon and hot bullets.
Tho South abhors "social equality,"
refuses to accept lt or Its advocates,
but gives the negro a square deal,
each raco working lu Its own way to
the common end of living poaceably
together, yet separate and distinct,
as Cod intended lt should be.
If the Shllladys and Ovlngtons will
but get busy with their own affairs
and not Interfore with "the South's
problem," tho South and tho other
sections of our great country will be
bettor for tho transfer of their ener
gies. _
