while visiting among his many old
friends here. He came to Oconee for
the purpose of visiting his brothers,
who reside in and near Seneca and

see our young friend again. Fie has
heen absent from Oconee for several
years.

Mrs. Sutherland died very suddenly

noon. her death being due to paraly
sis. Tho deceased was a sister of

-Ryau Chalmers, son of Mr. and
Mrs. T. Y. Chalmers, of tho Tainas
see section, returned home from over
seas anny service last week and will
be with his parents and among his
many friends for some time, having
received a ti 0-day furlough. Mr.
Chalmers volunteered for army ser
vice before war was declared against
Germany and has been in the ser
vice for more than two years. He
was at Camp Sherman. Ohio, when
he received Iiis furlough, bul will re
port to ('amp Gordon, Ga., at the ex
piration of his tin-day leave. Ile will
not be discharged at once, as he be
longs to the regular army and will
have to complete the period of ser
vice for which he enlisted. Ho has
many friends who are glad to have
him among them again.

-Frank Crow, of Piedmont, is

left Monday for Columbia, in which
city they will doubtless reside. Mr.
Macaulay's arrival home with his
wife was quite a pleasant surprise
to friends here. They were married
at the home of the bride's mother
in Columbia last Wednesday. Mrs.
Macaulay before her marriage was

-There was a very narrow e.::cape
from a serious accident at the cor
ner of Main and Tugaioo streets las:
Monday afternoon, when two F?rds
met at the corner. Ono of tho cars
belonged to Ceo. L. Wilson and was
just preparing to leave for Westmin
ster, when a car driven by Mr. Ed
wards, of Seneca, appeared on the
scene. There was a crash, a smash
and the hearts of two Fords beat as
one and the hearts of the drivers
and occupants of the cars were bare
ly prevented from escaping from tho
owners. A by-slander asserts that he
saw the hearts in the mouths of the
ones in the crash. Mr. Edwards said
that he was at fault in (he unfortu
nate mix-up and authorized the bill
for repairs to be sent to him. For
tunately no one was hurt in the least.

Mrihling. of .Jefferson, (?a., are glad
to welcome him back on a visit to
Oconee. Hov. Mr. Stribling has been

-Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Foster and
three children, of Manchester, Ala.,
are visiting the former's mother,Mrs.
Edmund Foster, of Richland, and
among other relutives in the county
for two weeks. Mr. Foster and his
family came to South Carolina in
their car. enjoying a most pleasant
trip of two days, the distance being
something more than 4?0 miles. Mr.
Foster paid close attention to crops
as he passed through the country,
and ho says tho best crops on the
entire route are to be found In Oco
nee county. There are, he said, some
fairly good crops on the Georgia side
along his route, but they do not com
pare at all favorably with the crops
he observed after getting on the
South Carolina side. Mr. and Mrs.
Foster have visited in Oconee on
other occasions and have a host of
friends who are glad to welcome
them. Mr. Foster Is a native of th!s
county, but has resided in Alabama
for fourteen or fifteen years.

Mr. Hutchison,after alighting from
the auto, stood close to the machine
In conversation, expecting his friend,
Frank Craig, who was driving, to
back the car before turning. Instead
of this, however, the turn was made
without hacking, and Mr. Hutchison's
foot was in the direct tracking of
tho wheel. We hope that Mr. Hutch
ison will soon be able to be out.
