Luke got into some trou hie a hon I two weeks ago, it is said, and was shot in the hand, and blood poison resulted, causing death in a short while. Ho was a well known darkey about Walhalla for many years, but had been away from this section for a number of years. ?Mr. ami Mrs. .1. A. Cook, of Mad ison, wore visitors in Walhalla last Friday. Mr. Cook informs us that a good portion of his large farm on Hie river is idle and growing up in weeds. Reid: "At the resi dence of J. O. Brock, on i hu rsc! ay morning, Rev. I. E. Wallace perform ed the ceromony which made Mrs. Thomas, who resides near Adams' ' crossing, and George Reid, of Cal houn, man and wife. Mr. and Mrs. Reid will make their home in this county." Mr. Reid was in The Cou rier office a few days after the happy ' even had taken place, but never so much as indicated to us that he was but so recently married. He men tioned lils largo family-17 children -and stated that this happy gather ing comprised "two sets" of chil dren, but thal was all. Even at this late day, however, we cannot refrain from extending to our good friend and his better half the very best of our good wishes for continued pros perity, long life and tho host of suc cess. -Tho many friends of (). C. Lyles, of Wost Union, will regret lo learn that he is confined to his bed, having been taken 111 some time Saturday night or Sunday morning. Mr. Lyles did not get. up at the usual time Sunday morning, and was not awakened or disturbed, the other oc cupants of the house in which he luis rooms thinking that he was enjoy ing a needed rest. When at noon, however, he had still not made his appearance, friends hogan to wonder at his prolonged stooping, and it was decided to lind out if anything was wrong. No response was r ceived to repeated knocks at his door, and the room was Dually entered. Mr. Lyles was found in an unconscious condi tion, and ho had evidently been un conscious for some time. A physician was at Once summoned, and it was found that his condition was due to ptomain poisoning. Heroic work was begun ?it once, and he soon hogan to revive, regaining a degree of con sciousness several hours later. Since Sunday afternoon he has boen im proving, though slowly, and yester day afternoon he was reported con siderably better, though still con fined to his bed. James was mustered out of the service at Camp Jackson, Columbia, and came up from that, city with his sister, Miss Annie, who ls attending a business college there. Miss Wilson returned to Columbia Sunday last and James left for that city this morning. Ho lias accepted a position there with the Southern Dell Telephone Compa ny. His many friends here were de lighted lo meet him again, and to noto th. ? army life bas agreed with him. While we regret that we can not keep with us our boys who are returning, still wo cannot refrain from uttering a few words of praise for those who come back to us with a desire to enter at once some field of activity and usefulness. Browning died at his home near Seneca last Saturday, and Iiis remains were interred nt the Hopewell burying ground on -linday Inst. He bad been in failing health for more than a year, though bis most serious trouble was of more j recent origin. Some months ago bc ! had his leg severely burt, and com plications set in, resulting finally In a trouble in the nature of gangrene. A week or moro ago bo was taken to a hospital i*n Spartanburg, hoping that ho might bo relieved by having the member amputated, but bis con dition at tho timo was such that tho physicians were unwilling to under take the operation, stating that it would mean certain death. Ho was brought back home, and lt was but a few days before the end came. Dr. Browning was well known all over Oconee, having practiced in almost every section of the county during a long torin of years, and for a time he enjoyed a wide practice in the country ns "the Indian doctor." Mo depended largely upon the remedies supplied hy nature for tho relief of human ills, and this fact, brought to bim the title of "Indian doctor." For several years past he had been con nected with what is known as tho holiness church; and there are many who state that his later years were lived in conformity with his adopted religion. it had been his misfor tune, however, to figure largely in the courts in our county, and at the pres ent time there is a charge against him in ibo Federal Court, which, of course will probably he dismissed in Its entirety by reason of his death, though nt ?he time the case was brought against him by the Federal ofllcei-8 it was not entirely settled as to whether or not there wore others associated in tho case, which is on the charge of attempting to defraud by tho uso of the United 'States mails. Dr. Drowning is survived by his wife and several children, all of the latter being grown up and, we are informed, married.
