-Dr. W. H. Browning died at his
home near Seneca last Saturday, and
Iiis remains were interred nt the
Hopewell burying ground on -linday
Inst. He bad been in failing health
for more than a year, though bis
most serious trouble was of more j
recent origin. Some months ago bc !
had his leg severely burt, and com
plications set in, resulting finally In
a trouble in the nature of gangrene.
A week or moro ago bo was taken
to a hospital i*n Spartanburg, hoping
that ho might bo relieved by having
the member amputated, but bis con
dition at tho timo was such that tho
physicians were unwilling to under
take the operation, stating that it
would mean certain death. Ho was
brought back home, and lt was but
a few days before the end came. Dr.
Browning was well known all over
Oconee, having practiced in almost
every section of the county during
a long torin of years, and for a time
he enjoyed a wide practice in the
country ns "the Indian doctor." Mo
depended largely upon the remedies
supplied hy nature for tho relief of
human ills, and this fact, brought to
bim the title of "Indian doctor." For
several years past he had been con
nected with what is known as tho
holiness church; and there are many
who state that his later years were
lived in conformity with his adopted
religion. it had been his misfor
tune, however, to figure largely in the
courts in our county, and at the pres
ent time there is a charge against
him in ibo Federal Court, which, of
course will probably he dismissed in
Its entirety by reason of his death,
though nt ?he time the case was
brought against him by the Federal
ofllcei-8 it was not entirely settled as
to whether or not there wore others
associated in tho case, which is on
the charge of attempting to defraud
by tho uso of the United 'States
mails. Dr. Drowning is survived by
his wife and several children, all
of the latter being grown up and, we
are informed, married. The deceased
was about 65 years of age.
