GERMAN OBJECTIONS TO PEACE Terms Convoyed in Several .Notes to Deeds of Conference. Berlin, May 16. - Count von ?rockdorff-hantzau, head of the Ger man peace mission at Versailles, has handed to M. Clemenceau, president of the peace conference, three notes, one of which deals with the economic aspect of thc peace terms and the effect it will have on Germany. It is pointed out in this note that Ger many is no longer an agrarian stute and cannot feed more than 10,000, 000 people. The economic terms of the peace treaty, with their restrictions of trade and other factors which are involved, means, the note says, that "many millions of people in Germany will perish, all the more quickly as the nation's health is already broken by the blockade." The nation points out that Oer many in two generations has passed from an agrarian to an industrial state. As an agrarian state it could feed 10,000,000 persons, and as an industrial country it was able to pro vide food for (?7.000,000. the note declares. Defore the war, it is said, ! .".,(1(10,(?00 Germans wore dependent for their living upon foreign trade, shipping and foreign raw materials. 'I'he note proceeds to indicate in de tail how the peace conditions would produce economic paralysis, destroy German industry and maka it Impos sible to provide work and food for millions of people, "who would be obliged to emigrate or perish." No relief work, however large its settle, or how long in duration, could prevent wholesale loss of life, tho note adds. "Tho peace terms," continues the note, "would demand of Germany several times as many victims as did the war. There have been nearly a million victims of the blockade." Count von Hrockdorff - Rantzau concludes by stating that he consid ers it his duty, before presenting fur ther details, to bring these general remarks to the general knowledge of the Allied and associated delegates, and promises to furnish statistical evidence if it is required. Vigorous measures that will be an immediate result of a refusal of . be Germans to sign the peace treaty have been planned by the council. .Marshal Foch, commander-in-chief of the Allied armies, is on the Rhine front, and dispatches state that he will take stich action as is necessary in the event of lite failure of the enemy to sign the treaty. An immediate economic blockade of Germany also is planned as a part of the program in case continued hos tile action against the enemy is con sidered necessary. The Austrian peace mission is at St. Germain-en-Lnye, near Paris, hav ing arrived Wednesday night, and the belief in some quarters is that 'be peace terms the delegates will be asked to sign will be presented to them within the week, possibly with in three or four days. The Adriatic question, which bas so important a bearing on tho Austrian treaty, has not yet been adjusted, however, and Ulis fact may serve to delay tho pre sentation of the terms. Meanwhile there are reports that strong . Italian forces have been landed at the ports of /.ara and Zeb enico, on the Dalmatian coast, be tween Kinnie and Spalato. These forces ave said to have moved inland and to bo fortifying strategic points. A Gio WEND A good friend stands by you when in need. Movement on Fool to Assist Farmers to Save Crop After Grown. . Clemson College, May !).-Geo. I'. Hoffman, extension service horticul turist, has preparen and sent to County Agent M. P. Moore, of Lau rens county, the blanks to be used by him with sweet potato growers and the managers of the Laurens sweet potato storage house. These agreement forms will doubtless he used in various other counties which have established, or will establish, potato houses for public use. The agreement calls upon the far mer to grow certain standard varie ties from disease-free seed or plants, | on land not planted in potatoes for i three years; 'o harvest, grade and ; handle the potatoes according to cer- j tain approved specifications; to de liver potatoes within a specified time, and to pay a storage charge of 25 couts per bushel, or 20 per cent of tho potatoes. The storage houso authorities do not guarantee against loss resulting from rots, except to refund storage charges; but with tho losses in such houses not over two por cent, there is practically no risk on tho farmer's part. Laurens county has taken a deci dedly progressive step in this mat ter, and it is expected that many other counties and communities not already provided with potato houses will follow suit.
