AX UNSEEN POWER WORKING j
To Poison tho Mimi and Soul of Our
People.
(R. H. Edmonds, Editor of Manu
facturers' Record. )
Mental suggestion, hypnotism and .
psychology aro all being used by Ger
many with a persistency and power !
Incomprehensible to people who have !
not understood the campaign by
which for years Germany has been
poisoning the wells of thought all
over the world.
Kor some years Germany, in a way
that is nothing less than Satanic In
its wide sweep throughout the world
and its tremendous power for evil,
has been utilizing mental suggestion
and hypnotism upon people who do
not themselves realize that they are
becoming possessed of the devil.
Many a man stands in the pulpit
and preaches peace without punish
ment, many an editor simpes an edi
torial or a headline, many a man in
public and private life makes state
ments calculated to weaken the mo
rale of America and of our allies
without himself realizing that he is
under the domination of the work of
mental suggestion and the hypnotic
power which Germany is exerting.
Impressions come to many people
lessening their hostility to Germany,
or lessoning their determination that
there shall bo no peace with an un
beaten Germany, who have not the
slightest Idea that these thoughts
have been put into their minds by the
dovil-work of German mental sug
gestions or hypnotic activities.
Tho tremendous power of this in
fluence ls not grasped at all; men
scoff at the power of mental sugges
tion or hypnotism without realizing
that there Is a fearfully dangerous
power In tho possession of some peo
ple to control the thoughts and acts
of others. Germany has developed
this power to the fullest extent. It
is a power from the devil himself.
For years Germany has boon util
izing lt tn order to plant throughout
the world Its poisoned thoughts and
to control mon and women who have
no conception of the fact that they
aro under tho domination of such an
evil influence, and, therefore, yield
willing obedience to lt.
We are facing a situation where
Germany is putting forth the mos!
tremendous effort In Its history tr
oxtond the infleunce of this monta
control, or hypnotic power, ovei
other pooplo, in order to secure poac<
without punishment.
Mon who think that they are talk
lng peace from high and holy mo
tl vos aro, In many cases, without rc
alizlng it themselves, being used b;
this Gorman hypnotic work, oxertei
directly upon them through som
pro->Qerman skilled In tho use o
mentnl suggestion or hypnotism.
Gorman psychologists, throug
American universities, in which tho
hold positions of honor, for year
sought to bring American though
under their control, just as othe
Germana have been engaged in sim
lar work all over tho world.
If wo accopt tho doctrine that th
devil sonds out Into every corner <
the earth his unseen workers of ovl
that ho puts Into ovory human heal
suggestions of sin, and dominates a
tho earth where the power of God 1
not superior, and where men do not
look wholly unto God for safety from
the wiles of the evil one, thou we
have an exact illustration of the work
of tho German propaganda of hypno
tism and mental suggestion or con
trol. The menace is a real one of :
tremendous import. Watch carefully
every suggestion of peace with an un
crushed, unrepentant Germany, and
know that it comes from pro-German
hypnotic power or from German
financial operations to influence by
money, where Germany cannot con
trol by "mental suggestion."

Sulphur Preserves Apples.
A Clemson College press bulletin
says:
An easy way of preserving applos
ls suggested by tho Iowa State Col
lege. The equipment ls a bushel of
sound apples, four wire baskets, Ave
cents worth of sulphur, and a lat je
clean barrel or box, Into the top or
sides of which books havo been
driven.
Remove the skin and core of tho
apples. Loave whole, quarter, or
slice In quarter-inch slices, ns prefer
red. Place in tho baskets or trays
to permit the sulphur fumes to touch
Gio surface of all pieces. Hang the
baskets on tho books In tho barrol
and touch a match to the sulphur
under tho barrel. Leave the fruit
until tho sulphur ls burned out,
which will bo in about eight or ten
hours, and thou pack the fruit in
earthen jars and keep in a cool dry
place.
Apples treated In this way will re
tain their moisture and flavor and
are delicious in pios, sauces and pud
dings. Tho sulphur will not spoil
tho tasto of tho fruit and lt prevents
discoloring. Other fruits also havo
been successfuly preserved in this
way.

Hiing Sugar, Tin and Quinine.
Washington, Aug. 16. - Forty
Dutch ships, totalling approximately
100,000 tons, now idle in Dutch East
Indian ports, aro expected to be re
leased to bring sugar, tin, quinine
and other commodities to the United
States as (he result of an informal
modus vivendi effected by the war
trado board through Charge d' Af
faires de Beaufort of the Dutch lega
tion.
Tonnage placed at the disposal of
the American government through
the agreement will be sufilclent, it
was* estimated to-day, to import from
50,000 to 100,000 tons of sugar and
also much needed quantities of tin
und quinine.
In return for the tonnage the Uni
ted States government will undertake
to license normal exports to the Is
lands, subject only to such limitation
of commodities as made necessary by
the war program.
Exports of tin, quinine and other
commodities originating in the is
lands will be accepted by tho United
States as the normal rate, and all su
gar offered will be taken, thereby
providing a market for as much of
the 1918 sugar crop at tho prevailing
high American price as the Dutch
ships are able to move.
