"I can and do recommend Tan lac
because of the way it helped me.
Tanlac is a wonderful medicine, and
I cannot find words to uxpre?n my
praise of it," declaied C. L. Carter,
of 71 Bay street, Charleston, a re
tired farmer. "For seven years 1
suffered with stomach trouble, indi
gestion and kidney trouble. During
that time I had the beni treatment
1 could get and even went to the hos
pital, without getting permanent re
lief. I suffered from a number of
minor ills that always kept me feel
ing badly, and I believe 1 had gall
stones. My most serious trouble was
convulsions, and at times 1 would bo
unconscious for hours. 1 have' had
those attacks on the street.
"My men urged me to take Tanlac,
and 1 took it, though then I did not
have much faith in it or any other
medicine. But I can now say that
Tanlac is wonderful. I have taken
seven bottles and feel as well as I
ever did. I have not had one of
those convulsions since I started tak
ing Tanlac. I feel like a new man,
have lots of strength and energy and
am not troubled at all."

J. D. Isbell asked, mo to go with
him through Westminster, Oakway
and to Fair Play; and as it had been
ten years since I had been in the
southern part of the county I gladly
accepted his kind invitation, for I
was anxious to spy out that goodly
land. We were ont two days. We
landed at Earle's Grove school house
at high noon on the 15th. Here we
rested and took dinner with L. H.
Richey. Yes, I wanted to see the i
j land, what it was; and tho people
that dwell therein, whether they be
strong or weak, few or many; and
what the land was that they dwell in,
whether it was good or bad, fat or
lean. And I was not long in decid
ing that this part of tho county is
another little Canaan. The land lies
well, rich and fertile; and the peo
pie are strong and many. They do
j not live in tents, but In beautiful
.strongholds-(we did not see any of
the sons of Annk in this goodly laud,
and were told that there were no
'giants there)-with the finishing
j touch of painter's brush, and the
j yards all decorated with beautiful
; flowers. Beecher said that flowors
Uvero the only beautiful things that
'God made and to which He forgot to
give souls. The gardens and Irish
potato patches are the very best, but
the swec). potato patches are few and
far between.
When we crossed the brook of Esh
col we did not see the ripe ?.rapes,
(plenty of green bunches, figs and
pomegranates), but there were ripe
strawberries and May cherries world
without end. Small grain ls fine,
especially wheat. I have never seen
finer stands of corn and cotton, nor
in finer condition, and everybody was
busy.
L. H. Richey has bought the Earle
.homestead-509 acres-Tor $30,500.
If I am not mistaken, this plantation
has been In the Earle family since the
days of the Revolution. It Is indeed
a fine plantation. Just in the rear
of the lot and garden there ls the
prettiest original forest that I have
seen In the county, and lt is literally
swarming with squirrels. Ten years
ngo this section was nearly all In

We spent tho night in the home ol
Henry Walker. This is a good place
to stop; he has a fine plantation and
a palatial home. Mr. Walker has fl
"bee" in his bonnet, his bonnet is in
the ring, and he is anxious to "ride
tho road."
It was our intention on the next
morning to go fishing at Maxwell's
Bridge, but a cold wind was coming
out of the gates of the east, and the
clouds wore leaking, so after enjoy
ing tho kind hospitality of this beau
tiful home, we headed for Fair Play

ty WAR SAVINGS STAMPS. ty
ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty
Very few people have ever stopped
to consider why real estate is regard
ed as the best security on earth. H.H.
Woodward, of Conway, S. C., has
given a very convincing idea on the
subject, and it is so brief and clear
that the war savings committee
deems it worthy of wide publication:
"Real estate has been regarded as
tho best security a man can have:
Why is real estate safe? Only be
cause tho government is safe. If the
government fails the title to land
falls, and the real estate mortgage
goes with it. All legal documents are
effective only because thc government
stands behind them. A war savings
stamp ls therefore just ns safe secur
ity aa land can ever be. Dy investing
in these stamps you loan your money
to tho government and thus aid lt in
winning tho war; which, if we lose,
all ls gone, including land. Aro you
a patriotic citizen,-a loyal member of
your freo and democratic govern
ment, or are you a slacker who ls
unwilling to help? If you are will
ing to lend your money to the govern
ment at a good rate of Interest you
will Invest in war savings nnd thrift
