Editor Keowee Courier: One of
my old acquaintances, J. B. B., and
several others have asked me to
write one more article and send it to
your paper for publication. Now, 1
am like the drowning man who
caught at a straw because it was
nearest him, and so 1 will try and
write about the thing that is nearest
me and that might'be of public inter
est.
I am enclosing two "pictures" of
school buildings in Oconeo county
which I would like for your readers
to look over and study carefully.
They are situated about four miles
apart, and represent the people of
two-communities. That the general
appearance ol' a building, whether
sc hool or church, is representative ol'
the community we will set forth in
this article. We begin with No. One:
Stoop low; take a close peep at
the weatherboarding, which has l>een
pulled loose from the frame of the
old carcass. And do 1 hear you say
you don't see the windows? Ol'
course you are not blind! Wo will
not go inside, for it is said that the
interior damage is a little beyond
that which you have already seen, if
possible.
I wisl I could give a true and
faithful likeness of patrons and pu
pils who did this job of work, but
this would be Impossible. Anyhow
yon might imagine a 1fi-year-old
hoy-wall-eyed, dish-faced, with a
small wisp of bristles sticking up
from the crown of bis head. This
boy, and others just like him, will
sing a licentious song, utter a blas
phemy, and then smash a window or
seize a companion by the throat.
Then "paw" and "maw," back home,
kinder wink out of the corner of one
eye and say everything is "o. k."
Yes, you know that "paw" and
"maw" used to sing and pray here,
and law! sich ringing of the hands
and tearing of the hair you never
seen In all your life! Thlm prayers
was certainly served up 'brown and
wrapped in pretty paper and tied
with ribbon to match.
But, as the old feller says, the
weather changes, and there be other
things that change, too. Along af
ter a while old Satan, he comes pil
ferin' 'round with little knick-knacks
and goodies in his hand and just
begs all the good folks, and keeps
lieggin' them, to take a little, until
finally they are just most obliged to
pertake of his hospitality. Then
"paw"-that is, the old man-he
got to swearin' a little till he found
out "maw" didn't keer fur it much.
Then it got so there wasn't nothing
too hard for him to utter. Finally
him and others got to beatin' and
thrashin* around; they blasphemed,
and pulled, and gouged, until-well,
you see the results In picture No. 1.
A few days after this-(don't be
lieve it if you don't want to)-why,
old Satan passes around agin and
begs old Brother Tightwad to
chase Deacon Doolittle up and down
the "red lane," and, if possible, to
wind his hands up in his hair. Then
as the historian says, when it comes
to a hand-to-hand encounter, Doo
little is advised to take his part, like
a man ought to, and he digs several
chunks of meat out of the other bro
ther's face.
We will now turn to No. Two for
a few brief lines, and then skiddoo:
The hoy who attends this school
wears a neat, clean blouse, and knee
pants, with cap to match, his books
carefully strapped or satcheled. Oh,
how we want to hug lils neck and
"just bite him." Ile is as clean as a
cake of soap and has a mouth that
cannot go without being kissed at
least two or three times a day. As
to this boy and tho school house he
enters, he cares a whole lot, and so
do his parents back at home. We
cannot show this hones up as it real
ly is, with i?s metal roof and nicely
painted walls. You bet it looks as
good inside as out. And still there
is room for improvement. Tho man
agers might induce the children to
plant a nice flower garden, with or
namental shrubbery, at a convenient
placo near the house. With a little
care such a place could be made vory
attractive as well as useful, and as it
is in sight of tho public road it might
become the talk of travelers from all
parts of tho county.
Now I have illustrated two differ
ent places so tho readers may Judge
between them, and without the In
tention of wilfully doing anybody in
justice. But "a tree is known by Its
fruits," and so you aro by the ap
pearance of your community center.

Westminster, S. C.
(Note.-Mr. Dickson sends us two
pen drawings of types of school
buildings to which he refers, but we
are not able to reproduce them hero.
No. 1 shows a dilapidated building,
a very few whole panes ot glasB left
in the two windows, a wood shingle
roof with shingles missing; the ono
door a "battened" affair, set in Its
facing some 15 degrees out of plumb;
the chimney well down at the base of
the roof, ready to send sparks Into
the shingles; weatherboards off here
and there, exposing gaping holes and
the frame work of the building;
every nail visible as lt stands out
from loose boards on the sides of the
house-a true representation of what
once was not an uncommon sight in
our county, but which now, fortu
nately, is indeed a rarity.
Drawing No. 2 shows an up-to
date building, modern in every re
spect, a neat and true-to-life repre
senatiou of what Oconee's one-teacher
school houses are as a rule to-day.)

Hinder Twine Used.
The size of the world may be guess
ed at, according to Farm and Fire
side, by the fact that lt takes nearly
a billion pounds of binder twine or
to bo exact, 400,000,000 pounds to |
meet its needs each year. An enthu
siast fur ligures could spend an In
teresting hour in figuring out how j
many times this twine would reach
around the world. "Of this immense
amount moro than 80 per cent isl
made of henequ?n. This liber, which
is so frequently miscalled sisal, is
secured from the leaves of tho hene
qu?n plant. Henequ?n grows tn Yu
catan and Cuba, but the first-named
country produces most of tho supply.
Henequ?n grows in many of tlie
tropical countries, but moro than
nine-tenths of lt comes from Yuca
tan. The limestone soil and the hot,
dry climate there are favorable to its
growth."
