GOV. SPRY REFUSED WILSON'S
Request for Further Reprieve of Con-1

Salt Lake City, I tali, Nov. 18.
Governor William Spry, with the
unanimous concurrence of the Stute
hoard of pardons, telegraphed Presi
dent Wilson to-day that he would not ;
interfere further in the case of .los. 1
ilillstrom, a native of Sweden, and a
I mom!.vi of tue I W W., sentenced to
I ho executed to-morrow. The Gover
nor's telegram was in answer to one
received yeste?*da> from the President
regarding a reconsideration of the
ease. Ilillstrom was convicted of
murdering a grocer and his son iii
15)14. He will he shot probably early
to-morrow morning.
Governor Spry said in his telegram
he is satisfied the President's request
is based on a misconception of the
facts or that there is some reason of
an international nature that the Pres
ident lias not disclosed, and that fur
ther postponement would be an un
warranted Interference with the
course ol' justice, and that he cannot
lend himself or Ids office to such in
te rl'erence.
The live men appointed to execute
Ilillstrom have been directed to re
port at the prison al <i o'clock to-mor
row morning.
Jos. Ilillstrom was convicted ol' the
murder of John (?. Morrison, a gro
cer, of Salt Lake City. Ptah and his
son. Aiding. 17 years old. at Morri
son's store in the southern portion of
the city about !> o'clu .?< on the even
ing of January 10, 15)14.
The shooting was witnessed by
Merlini Morrison, another son. 14
years old. According to this boy's
story, which was corroborated on
many points by other evidence, two
masked men entered the store with
drawn pistols and, saying "We've got
you now!" opened dre on Morrison,
who fell mortally wounded with a
bullet through his chest. Ailing Mor
rison ran to an ice box in the store,
seized a :?8-calibro revolver and flied.
Helote the boy could shoot again, he
fell pierced by three bullets and died
almost Instantly. The men then ran
from the store, one of them exclaim
ing that he was shot, and were ob
served to run southward from the
store. The surviving son bent over
his father, who became unconscious
after having inquired where his as
sailants were, and died soon after
ward.
Ilillstrom, also known as Joe Hill,
was arrested three days after the
shooting on information given by a
doctor near Murray, Utah, two and a
half miles south of the scene of the
crime. Ilillstrom staggered into the
doctor's home two hours after Hie
shooting, with a large bullet wound
through his left lung. He told the
doctor he had been shot In a quarrel
over a woman and reuuested thal
nothing be said retarding his visit or
wound The doctor, not having heard
of the murders, treated the wound
anti took Ilillstrom to a house where
he had been staying for several days.
News of the murders recalled the case
to the doctor and he informed the
officers. The doctor lound an auto
matic pistol, of the same calibre as
shells found in the grocery after the
shooting, in Hillstrom's pocket. Ilill
strom threw the weapon away after
leaving the doctor's home. Blood was
lound at several places between the
store and the home ol' the doctor, and
members ol' the iamily where ilill
strom lived said a companion bad

ders, talked privately with him and

(J. C. Haydon, in Progressive
Farmer. )
The object of a home garden
should he ID reduce the increasing
high cost ot living, and on the tarin
nothing can do moro to attain this
end than a garden that is wisely
planned and managed. Some form
yt' hot hod or cold tia mo is necessary
in order to obtain frosh vegetables
for uso every day of the year.
These iran?es are not luxuries.
They are cheap, easily constructed,
may be permanent, and are easily
managed Quick maturing crops like
lettuce and radishes aro easily
grown. In fact, those hods ma> bo
advantageously used to prolong tho
season or to mature crops in advance
of their normal season.
lt is useless to order plants each
voar for the spring crop. Cabbage,
egg pla??, pe plier, tomato, sweet po
tato, cucumber, squash and water
melon sleds may bo sowed six to eight
weeks bet?r? danger of frost is over.
Tile plants are hardened off and
transplanted to the Hold tis soon ?is
soil and climatic conditions aro right.
Hotbeds and cold frames are of tho
same dimensions, the only difference
in their construction being that the
hotbeds aro supplied with some form
of bottom heat. The application of
heat transforms the cold frame into
a hotbed, which is recognized as a
true forcing structure.
Locate frames convenient to the
house, at some point whore members
of tho family will pass each day. This
will insure attention, Select a well
drained location, ono with a southern
or southwest exposure. Protection
from the north or wost by some
building, fence, or wind-break is de
sirable. Nearness to water supply is
also essential.
Any <oie handy with a hatchet and
. ;;v. " ill experience no difficulty in
constructing either of these beds.
The back and front of the frames are
made of I xl 2-inch boards. All frames
are constructed in sections :ixti
inches to conform to standard hot
bed sash. It will bo necessary then
to place 2x2-inch planks every throe
feet to support the sash. For hardy
plants rainas has boon found to be as
valuable as glass The chief objec
tion to canvas is that the light is ex
cluded on real cold days. Canvas
will last only several years. while
sash, if properly cared for, may bo
used Indefinitely.
In constructing a hotbed, unfor
mentcd manure ?3 always used as a
source ol' artifiicla] heat. Horse ma
nure is best; especially that obtained
from animals fed on grain. After
niau ii re is packed ill, from four to
six inches of rich garden loam is
added to the frame. Sashes should
then be placed on to hasten fermen
tation. Seeds are not planted until
the temperature in the bods has
fallon to 7? to.80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Watering is an Important factor.
Seedlings are often attacked by fun
gus diseases duo to injudicious wa
tering. Tho only time to water plants
is in the early morning on fair days.
An application at night lowers the
temperature unduly, thus making the
plants more susceptible to disease at
tacks. Ventilate after each watering
to dry foliage and surface of soil. To
ventilate, place a block of wood or a
brick under each sash. If seed are
sowed in drills that permit cultiva
tion, stir soil to maintain a das!
mulch.
