and oilier records. Scarcely a large
plate glass window remains itu act in
the down-town section, and many
stocks of gool., were damaged by
wind and rain. Signs, telegraph,
telephone and electric lighl po es,
wires and debris from damaged
buildings littered streets lo dav. and
hundreds of st md'ire:, were unroof
ed or demolished ill various parts of
the city.
Karly unofficial statements placed
the property damage at near
ly $2,000,000. According to reports
available, seven persons lost their
lives, and it was estimated that at
least 150 persons were more or less
injured by the collapse of buildings,
falling signs or flying glass.
In tho Cumberland Telephone Com
pany's exchango, 15 persons, mostly
girls, were injured when all the win
dows in the oast front on the floor
where they wore working, crashed

bureau as between 120 and HO miles
an hour. The wind blew at this rate
for one minute, between 5.30 and *'?

gating reports of collapsed buildings.
Two hundred young women were re
moved b.v the police in automobiles
and police vehicles from a cigar fac
tory threatened with destruction just
before nightfall. They were housed
in 'Ix criminal court building until
the storm abated.
Numerous school buildings and
churches were destroyed or badly
damaged bj the wind. Approximately
8,000 telephones were rendered use
less and trolley service was suspend
ed after :'. o'clock yesterday after

American Ship Blown Up,
Washington, Sept. 30. The Amer
ican sailing ship Viticeiii was blown
up September 27 by a mine off Cape
Orliff in the While Sea and is a total
loss. The crew waa saved, bul the
itiptain and fnn-e men were injured.

to-day reported the disaster.

electrocution. Albert Pritz, driver of
a delivery wagon, stepped on a fallen
wiro early to-day, and was Instantly
killed. C. I). Smith, a steamboat em
ployee, late to-day attempted to re
move a fallen wire from the path of
some children. As ho touched the
wire the current in it killed him.

Morgan City. La., Sept. 30.-Prop
erty damage here as a result ol' yes
terday's storm was estimated to-day
at $200,000. Throe steamboats were
sunk in the harbor, small craft were
wrecked, a number of buildings were
unroofed and frail structures torn
from their foundations. At its height
the wind attained a velocity of 85
miles an hour.

Snit Against I >e('n mp Settled.
Caffney, Sept. 30.- The (;,se of J.
ll. Hube vs. Rd. ll. DcCnmp, which
has boen pending in tho courts for
some months, and which excited a
great deal of Interest all over the
State, was settled yesterday, and the
case withdrawn by mutual consent.
The suit was for alleged libel and
damages were laid In the, sum of
$20,000. Tho plaintiff based his suit
upon statements published in the
Gaffney Ledger, which ho claimed
were libellous.

members of his family. The follow
ing dispatch was received this morn
ing by Judge Nicholls:

regret to inform yon that Second
Lient. W. M. Nicholls. U. F. A., was
killed in action between 2(>th-27th
September. Lord Kitchener expresses
sympathy."
Lieut. Nicholls, who left for Eng
land soon after the European war
was declared, having resigned from
the United states Naval Academy al
Annapolis a year previous to become
a member of his father's law firm
here, spent several months In Lon
don before his service iti the English
army was accepted; but finally, after
laking the oath of allegiance lo Eng
land, secured a commission ?is second
lieutenant in the Royal Artillery and
was sent lo Mic front about a year
a uo.
On March 21 lie was wounded, be
in:; shol through the thigh. This
caused lum to spend several months
in a hospital, but, recovering from
i hat wound, he was again sent to the '
front, possibly three months ago.
News of his death was not a sur
prise to members of his family here,
since the dispatches of the last few
days announcing the .advance of tho
forces of the allies in France and
Belgium caused them to realize thal
Lieut. Nicholls was in the thick of
the lighting.
Efforts will be made to have Lieut.
Nicholls' body recovered and return- j
ed to this city for burial. Such a j
request has been sent to the British j
war office by Judge Nicholls. The
State Department at Washington has
been asked to aid.
Montague Nicholls will he reinem- j

"lt has come io the attention of
tlie collector of internal revenue for
the District of South Carolina, that
some of tlie banks in this State have
failed to comply with the Emergency
Revenue Act, in that revenue stamps
have not been placed upon notes and
other papers handled by banks. The
law requires that a documentary
stamp of two cents for each one hun
dred dollars or fraction thereof, be
placed upon all notes, and if banks
fail to do this it will be necessary
for the collector to institute' pro
ceedings against them.''

tion of what the administration is
planning to do for the protection of
American industries built up as a

in an open letter by Secretary Red
field to Dr. E. IO. Pratt, chief of the
bureau of foreign and domestic com
merce, made public yesterday.
