A REVENUE OFFICER TALKS.
R. o. Merrick Tells of Conditions
Now Compared to Previous Vrais.
( Anderson Mall, 1 9th. ?
H (?. Merrick, general deputy col
lector of the Slates of South and
.North Carolina, is spending to-day in
thc elly In company with Mr. Brad
ley, one of the employees or agents
of the revenue department. They
came to Anderson on business con
nected with i lu? department.
Mt. Mel l ick is a native of Walhalla
and has visited Anderson on many
occasions. Ile has many friends here
who were delighted to see him again.
Mr. Merrick has been engaged In
thc government reveille department
for many years ind mis worked him
self up to the present position. He
talks interestingly about the condi
tions in the .meint, ins now as com
pared with conditions of scvor.il ?
years ago when blockade distilleries
were more numerous than school
houses and churches.
The blocki.de business in the
mountains is or the wane, as tue
records of the activities of revenue
officers will show. The number af
cases of this kind called every
months in Greenville when the Fede
ral Court convenes diminishes with
every term of court, and this is due,
probably, to the increase in the num
ber of convictions and the sentences
i inposed.
Mr. Merrick says that at the Octo
ber. HMS. term of the Federal Court
there wcl'e MM rCVOIIlie cases de
posed Of: at the next term of this
Conn in April, lill I. the number of
revenue eases dropped to pe, and ai
the recent October terni. MM I. there
were oiilv revenue case- There

Of this number :'.*> defendants cathe
forward and entered pleas of guilty,
12 were convicted when placed <>n
trial and the Court continued two ol
three eases.
Mr. Merrick says the section
known as the "Dark Corner" (Green
ville county) no longer maintains ?ts
repa ta! ion. "When I first went into
the business several years ago it was
a common occurrence for us to cut
up four or five distilleries a day in
our raids of several days. On one or
two days I recall we cut as many as
twelve stills." declared Mr. Merrick.
"Now, however, it is a rare instance
for us to cut a still in that part of
the country. I don't suppose we av
erage more than eight or ten stills
there a year now." j
Mr. Merrick tobi of the ex|>erlenee
he and his men had in locating and j
destroying some of the stills. Ile
told ol' one way up in the mountains
which was most d illicit ll to locate.
He said t hey had informal ion that 1
whiskey was bein;; distilled up thor
but they could no! lind any tracks:
leading to a distillery. "Finally,one
day we bearii a man over in thc
woods chopping. We went in his di
rection, and we noticed that thc
path out io where he was rutting
wood was slick, as if being used fre
quently. The path came to an end
in the branch right near when lii
was chopping wood, and the Hrs! im
pression we had was that the path j
led to the stream for water for thc
house," said Mr. Merrick. "The path
looked like it had been used too
much just to gel water, so we gol out
in the mid.lb- of the stream and no
ticed that on some of tho rocks ?ii'
midstream the moss had been worn
away. We noticed this as wc pro
ceeded up the stream. Finally, after
going np stream about lou yards, wo
found a slick path, similar to the one
we liad found when wo entered thc
.trenn. This path led across t he
mountain and to one of the most'
complete and hiriiesl distilleries I'
ever saw. The distillers used a <-ir
dillons route and one thai led
through the water for some distance,
hoping that the stream would oblit
?rale their tracks."
\ not lier incident Mr. Merrick tobi
of was the catching of Hen Ward,
Hamp Sui beria nd and hall Lee. three
well known men of the Panther Gnp
section, lust before the Vorth Caro
lina line is crossed up in the Chat
looga Uiver -cition. Mr. Merrick
says thal he had mn iced on several of;
his visits to that section before that
these tuen were mashing their apples'
liol storing hiern in vessels In their
buildings around the house. Ile sus
pect d that they were preparing lo
manufacture brandy, but they de
clared they were gelling ready to ?
make vinegar, and the government
laws lo not prohibit the making of
vlnegni. Mr. Merrick says that on
his last visit h. that neighborhood he
lound one of the men out in the
woods culling wood, which he car
ried down tho branch to a stlllhouse,
which bad been built only recently.
"I watchem the man go into ?he
stlllhoufe with the wood and I walk
ed up to the bouse while they we'?
engaged in making tho run at the
still. I had no ono with me to cor
roborate testimony, but 1 took a
chance and walked In. The mon
gave up without resistance-one of
them, Ben Ward's brother, skipped
out and got away. The other three
were haled into Court at Greenville,
and they each entered a plea of
guilty. Ward was given three
months, Sutherland one month and
I.IM- two months. The sentence on
i lu' drat offense is very light."
Following the crusade against the
liquor trafile made hy the city an
thon ti.- Mic govern men: sent men
hore to collect revenue li euses, and
several collections were ai.ide.

(Anderson Mall, 19th.)
W. L. Bradley, formerly of Abbe

<; emilie, where he is employed as
a revenue officer and internal tax col
lector, is in the city on a business
trip.
Mr. Bradley has just returned
from Horry county, (the conni y in
the extreme eastern part of the
State*), down on the coast, where ho
located and destroyed three of the
largest blockade distilleries ever seen
in South Carolina.
Thc general Impression is thal
blockade liquor is made only in tho
counties in the mountains and at the
foothills of the mountains. But Mr
Bradley says the work ls not con
tined to those counties.
I he three stills found and destroy
ed in Horry county were within two
miles of each other, and. Judging
from the .surroundings, they must
have been in operation for a great
many years.
Mr. Bradley came to Anderson to
moot R. 0- Merrick, one of the head
government men of this section. Mr.
Merrick raided a section of the coun
try known as ChattOOga Ridge, seve
ral miles above Walhalla, a few day ;
ago. and two stills were destroyed.
Mr. Merrick is expected to arrive
here this afternoon. He and Mr.
Bradley are now engaged in enforc
