CLEVER SWIDLdOR AT WORK.
Numerous lOdgeficld Morclmnis Full
Vl<'(inls of Suave Stranger.
E dept Ile ld, Oct. 8.-A clever swin
dler has been fleecing several country
merchants In this county. A man
representing himself to be C. C. Jack
son, a traveling salesman for the
Graves-Manning Manufacturing Co.,
crockery manufacturers, of Newark,
Ohio, recently made a tour of the
county, calling upon'sevtral country
merchants. After exhibiting his
wares and urgently soliciting an or
der he would purchase some article
of merchandise and state that in or
der to pay for it the merchant would
have to cash his weekly expense
check, be being short of cash. From
one merell int lie purchased a razor
and presented a check for $16..r?0.
The unsuspecting merchant deducted
the price of the razor and gave the
drummer the difference tn cash. From
another he purchased some jewelry
and presented a check for $26. The
price of the jewelry was likewise do
ducted In this instance and thc- re
mainder paid in cash. From a
third he received $11 in cash for a
similar check, which was represented
as being his weekly expense check.
From a fourth merchant he purchas
ed a pair of shoes and offered a check
in payment as he did to bis other vic
tims, Lat .is the merchant did not
have on band Bufllcie.it cash to pay
thedifforence the drummer Drought
the shoes to Fdgofield and told the
merchant that he would leave the
money with a local hoted proprietor
after having tho check cashed here.
This, ol course, he did not do. Ho
made no effort to bave any of his
checks cashed in the Kdgelield banks.
In the e course of business the
checks which ?ere drawn on the
Commercial Hank and Trust Com
pany of Newark, Ohio, were deposited
in bank and forwarded for collection.
All of the cheeks were returned un
paid, accompanied by the statement
that, there was no such bank in New
ark, lu addition to losing their mer
chandise and thc cash paid the man
representing himself to be a drum
mer, the merchants bad to pay the
protest fee on the checks.
The checks were regularly drawn
and bore no evidence that would lead
one to suspect they were bogus. They
were lithographed, regularly num
bered, the mini ber being above .*">,
000, and were sinned by the Craves
Manning Manufacturing Company,
per D. C. Craves, manager, the name
of the concern being j,Iso in large
lithographed letters across the body
of the check. The name of the bank
was in the lower left corner. The
trick of the swindler was so clever
that nine merchants out of ten who
are remotely situated from a bank
would be an easy victim. A fifth mer
chant In this county would have been
?minus some cash and a rain coat,
which <ho fellow pretended to want,
had it not been that the merchant
had urgent need for the cash to pay
for cotton seed.

Columbia. Oct. 12.- Special: The
fanners all over our State are Invited
and urged to attend the exhibition on
bird protection in the Agricultural
Building during the State Fair, Octo
ber 26-30.
This exhibit ls the first of the kind
ever held lu this State, lt is under
the auspices of the National Associa
tion of Audubon Societies, In co-ope
ration with the bird committee of the
Federation of Women's Clubs.
This exhibit will be Interesting and
instructive. Scientific experts have
been studying the food habits of
birds for forty years. Some of the
results of these Investigations will
be shown by picture, chart and pul -
Mentions. Owing to their feeding
habits most birds are of immeivio
value to farmers. Therefore, birds
should be protected.
A resident hunter's license law af
fords one of the best means of bird
protection. This is taught by the
experience of other States possessing
such a law.
One of the greatest enemies of bird
lifo is the common cat. A place will
be given to the cat In this exhibit.
There will be display of models of
practical bird bouses and boxes which
can be constructed for a few cents.
Valuable literature on the subject
of bird protection will be distributed
free. Belle Williams,

Torpedo Net Proves Failure.
Newport, Oct. '.?. From a test that
was made here to-day under the di
rection of Commander John K. Rob
inson, in charge of the torpedo sta
tion, ami watched by various ord
nance exports of the navy, it appears
that steel nets are no protection to
battleships against torpedo attack.
A torpedo, the war head of which
was loaded with 2 10 pounds of gun
cotton, was fired from the torpedo
boat Morris at a steel net that bad
been moored in Coddlngton Cove.
The torpedo exploded and water was
sent 100 feet Into the air. The sur

Washington, Oct. 5.-Optimistic
Senators are predicting that Congress

war tax bill. Whatever happens,
however, unless there are unexpect

to involve American affairs, the Leg

Senator Kern and Representative
Underwood, majority leaders, are be
sieged every few minutes in the day
by their colleagues with inquiries
about plans for adjournment. Sena
tor Kern replied that the session can
be adjourned If the members will
stay at their posts and aid in expe

revenue measure. Mr. Underwood
replier that the House will complete
