T. M. Lowery, of Americus, Qa.,
spent yesterday in Walhalla attend
ing to matters of business. Mr. Low
ery Is the picture of health and re
ports all members of his family en
joying a full measure also. Mr. Low
ery ls sun-browned and bronzed, and
says that since he has been conduct
ing large fa rm operations he has quit
bunting the shade altogether. The
"Oconee colony" at and near Ameri
cus, he reports as doing well as a
whole, all being well satisfied and
prospering. Mr. Lowery has a host
of friends in Wlalfballa anti else

Oconee County" was organized at a
meeting held In Westminster, and
the prospects for a very valuable In
stitution for tho farmers of Oconee

Mrs. Martha Wilson, widow of
the late Andrew T. wilson, died last
Sunday at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. (Omma Pierce, In Seneca, her
death occurring al <? o'clock p. m.
She had been sick for only about
three days, suffering an attack ol
pleurisy, which, coupled with the In?
fl rmi Hos of age, proved more than
her fatling Strength COUld withstand.
She was In her Xiith year. She was
a staunch member of . the Baptist
church, having held her membership
in the Cross Roads (Bickens county)
llaiilist church for tb" long term of
almost sixty years. For many years
Mrs. Wilson resided In and near
Walhalla, ?hut on the death of her
husband, Andrew T. Wilson, she
went to resido with her daughter,
near Seneca. Tho Interment took
place in Westview cemetery, Wal
halla, Monday at noon.. Mrs. Wilson

-Mrs. William Goss, who was re
cently bitten by a dog, which was
later ascertained to have been suf
fering from hydrophobia, has return
ed from the Pasteur Institute at Co
lumbia and is being treated here by
Dr. B. F. Sloan Her condition is
quite favorable for recovery without
serious results. Mrs. Goss's home 1s I
in the Salem section of Oconee. ami
it is reported that there are a num
ber of dogs in that community whose
owners know that the animals are
afflicted with rabies, yet refuse to
have them killed or to keep them up.
This, if true, is deplorable in the ex
treme. Such a course is crimina!,
and it is hard to believe that there
is a citizen of Oconee who would be
so thoughtless as to protect the life
of a diseased dog at the possible risk
of endangering the lives of human
beings.
-Dock Moore, who wa? tried and
convicted at the July (1912) term of
Court for Oconee on the charge of se
duction, and was sentenced to serve
five years In the penitentiary or on
the public works of the county, too
gan serving his sentence Monday of
this week. From the verdict and
sentence of the Court of General Ses
sions Moore gave notice of appeal to
the Supreme Court and was granted
bail pending the hearing before the
Supreme Court. The appeal was
never perfected, however, and at the
March term of Court for Oconee he
was ordered to begin serving his sen
tence, but did not appear at that
term of the Court. A bench warrant
was Issued by the Circuit Judge and
placed in the hand? of tho sheriff.
Last Saturday He v. ?t. located in Sen
eca and arrested, being lodged in
jail until the officers from the public
works cern ld be notified. He was
taken to the county farm Monday af
ternoon.
-News of the death of J. Matt
Whltmlre, which occurred at his
home at Newry Tuesday morning,
was received in Walhalla during the
day with deep regret by a wide circle
of friends here. Mr. Whltmlre had
l>een in feeble health for a long time,
and the announcement of his pa . lng
away was not unlooked for by those
who knew of his serious condition.
Mr. Whitmire was about 67 years of
age, and at one time was one of
most substantial farmers of the Jo
cassee section of the county, though
for a number of years he had made
his home at Newry, going from there
to Seneca, where he resided for a
short while, returning to Newry.
About two years ?go he suffered a
stroke of paralysis, from which he
never recovered, though he was at
Limes able to be out. He was a
staunch member of the Methodist
[burch and always took an active
part in the affairs of the church in
the county so long as his health
would permit. In his death Oconee
lias lost a substantial citizen and a
good man. We join with a host of

Funeral services will be held to-day.
The interment will take place at
Fairview this afternoon at 3 o'clock,
the services at the grave to be in
charge of the Masonic fraternity,

Melchert states that he has selected
a place situated quite like the coun
try around Walhalla, but misses the
climate of this section. He and Mrs.
Melchert have a host of friends wno
would welcome their return to Wal
halla, but who wish them every suc
cess in their new home.
