The Florence Times is puzzled to
know why il is. with the banks able
and ready to help the farmer to hold
his cotton, so much of the staple
should he offered for sale at a time

Thc answer is not far to seek. The
average farmer is honest. Ile wants
to pay his debts. The average farm
er is skeptical of that which lie does
lot know of bis own knowledge or
thal is not told bim personally by
Nonie one in whom he has confidence,
and he is more often than not. in
clined to pessimism, at least as to
matters which are, or which he im
agines to be. beyond his control. Ile

his ev u power to control his product
when, as at present, economic con
ditions are not unfavorable to him.
He lias always taken what somebody
else offered bini for his cotton, and
at heart lie is afraid that lie is going
lo have to do so for a long time to
come, at any rate. The result is
that, with outstanding obligations to
meet, and with the fear gnawing him
that the price of cotton may go lower
still, he refuses the proffered assist
ance of the hanker ?md makes up his
mimi that there is nothing for him
to do except to sell his crop ?is fast
as lie can harvest it, al least until he
has paid himself out of debt.

a position to remedy such a situation
as now exists in the colton market ?ill
