Tlic Cotton Producer Loses Out on back of Confidence, (News and Courier.) The Florence Times is puzzled to know why il is. with the banks able and ready to help the farmer to hold his cotton, so much of the staple should he offered for sale at a time v, li? ii Ihr price is lower than it lias Peen for years past. Thc answer is not far to seek. The average farmer is honest. Ile wants to pay his debts. The average farm er is skeptical of that which lie does lot know of bis own knowledge or thal is not told bim personally by Nonie one in whom he has confidence, and he is more often than not. in clined to pessimism, at least as to matters which are, or which he im agines to be. beyond his control. Ile docs . . t realize as he should realize his ev u power to control his product when, as at present, economic con ditions are not unfavorable to him. He lias always taken what somebody else offered bini for his cotton, and at heart lie is afraid that lie is going lo have to do so for a long time to come, at any rate. The result is that, with outstanding obligations to meet, and with the fear gnawing him that the price of cotton may go lower still, he refuses the proffered assist ance of the hanker ?md makes up his mimi that there is nothing for him to do except to sell his crop ?is fast as lie can harvest it, al least until he has paid himself out of debt. In thc face of such a feeling on die part of the only Individual who ls in a position to remedy such a situation as now exists in the colton market ?ill Hie resolutions of cotton conventions must (onie to naught, all the advice of newspapers and orators is in vain. Aidions speak much more loudly than words. So long ?is the farmer bears the market himself what is thor?? for bim lo expect ? The present price of conon is un warranted. lt is not based upon ?my just law of supply and demand. li does ne' reproseni a lair profit io de producer, hut on the contrary spells an actual loss. li could mu ?blain except for the failure of Ibo farlie!- io stand together. Rut if the fanner expects lo gel what his cotton is worth he must show thai he lias confidence in ils value bj refus ile-; (n until ho gets a proper prlci !: is always the disposition of the buy or to pay as little as the other How will lake.
