MINERS CRUSHED RY SLATE.
Twenty-Three Dead in Coal Mine at
Elk (.'arden, W. Va.
Elk Garden. W. Va.. April 24.
Twenty-three miners are dead in Ott
Mine No. 20 of the Davis Coal and
Coke Company here as the result of
an explosion early to-day. lt cannot
be learned yet whether the explosion
was caused hy dust or gas.
As soon as the accident became
known. Superintendent Robt. Grant
organized a rescue corps of the min
ers off duty, and these attempted to
enter the mine.
The rescue parties had not advanc
ed far into tho workings before they
discovered it would take several days
to dig through the heaps of roof coal
and slate that had been loosened by
the explosion. It then was decided to
effect an entrance nearer the proba
ble point of the explosion by cutting
through the wall of an adjoining
mine owned by the same company.
Located Under To-vn.
Late this afternoon the rescuers
had penetrated to the No. 20 mine at
a point about four thousand feet
from the outside entry. There still
remained about the same distance to
go before reaching the miners.
The Ott Mine No. 20 is almost di
rectly under the town of Elk Garden,
which is on a hill. The mouth of the
minc ls about half a mile from the
town.
In striking contrast to the usual
mine explosions, the victims in this
case, with one exception, are Ameri
cans.
A FORWARD MOVEMENT.
Presiding Ehler ('anthon Heartily
Approves the Work of Laymen.
At. no time in the history of the
church has there been greater activ
ity in general benevolence. Men
are donating larger sums of money
for every phase of human develop
ment, and many are devoting their
service to various sorts of uplift
work. This is not. a condition con
fined to one branch of the church
alone, but every Christian denomina
tion has caught a larger vision of
pi'vilege and obligation to make bet
ti And this disposition ls not con
fined In its benefits to the home
country, but the nations beyond the
seas aro coming in for their share of
this divinely inspired purpose. In
no day has the missionary spirit
been greater. .The churches are
hearing the call from afar, "Come
over and help us," and they are re
sponding in the most encouraging
manner. Last year was a record
breaker in missionary enterprises
and contributions, and we expect this
to be the most fruitful In all the his
tory of the years.
In view of this general spirit our
local churches throughout South Car
olina are planning to take a place in
the front rank. Not a few pastoral
charlies, individual churches and in
dividual persons are undertaking the
support of their own missionaries in
the foreign field. And il ls not an
unsafe prophecy that bo fore many
