Rev. Mr. Cole was a young man,
not over :50 or 32 years of age. and
was held lt) high esteem hy many
friends throughout tho county, where
he was known as a very promising
young minister of the Baptist
church. Ile was a son of thc late
A. A. Cole, and about six months ago
married a .Miss Waiters, a daughter
of 'Phos. Walters, of Georgia. Ho
left a note, In which he stated that
inability to meet his debts wt ? ono
of the causes that prompted him to
take his life.
Magistrate Jeff B. Marett, of the
South I nion section, acting as coro
ner, on Monday empanelled a jury of
inquest, who, after due deliberation,
returned the following verdict:
"That the said T. O. Cole came to
his death from a gunshot wound in
flicted at his own hands some time
during the afternoon of September
16th, li< IO."

Enjoyable Occasion at Ebenezer.
Ebenezer. Sept. IO.-Special; Cot
ton Is opening rapidly in this section
and farmers are busy gathering their
short crop.
A most enjoyable day was spent
last Friday by the Ebenezer schools,
Nos. 1 and 2, at Ebenezer No. I. Af
ter all arrived several games of ball
were played, and everybody seemed
to have a good time. At 1 I o'clock
tho bell was rung and all entered the
school room, and were very attentive
to tho address of County Superin
tendent Hughs, who made an excel
lent, and inspiring speech on
"School," Following him were C. R.
D, Ruins and C. O. Mann, who also i
made excellent addresses. The as
sembly was then dismissed for din
ner and in n few moments a lengthy
labb- was prepared in the beautiful
front yard and au abundance of
good things spread on it. About
thirty minutes were pleasantly spent
talking and laughing. In the after
noon M. (5. Holland made an address
on agriculture. This was a most
delight ml affair and will long be re
membered by those present.
Mrs. Annie Jones and three chil
dren, who have been spending a
week among relatives and friends,
will return to their home In Green
ville Tuesday.

Abbeville, Cu., Sept. 10.-Insane
because his attentions had been re
jected by Mrs. Eugene Royal, a
widow of this place, and crazed by
the alleged effects of protracted
drinking, B. Manass, shot and kill
ed Mrs. E. H. Williams, wife of ex
Mayor Williams, a sister of Mrs.
Royal, dangerously wounded Mrs.
Royal, and then turned his revolver
on himself, inflicting mortal wounds.
Physicians say that lhere is a possi
bility that Mrs. Royal will recover,
but that Manass''death la only a

The tragedy caused the greatest
sensation in Abbeville. All of the
parties are prominently connected,
Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Royal hav
ing a number of relatives throughout
Hie State.
Manass, who is a widower, ls said
to have been in love with Mrs. Royal
for a loni; time. She had rejected
his snit on several occasions, but
Manass had shown no signs of at
tempting to revenge his rejection
until to-day.
Manass is alleged to have believ
ed that Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Royal's
sister, was responsible for Mrs.
Royal's declining lo marry bim.
Meeting the women this morning,
Manass drew his revolver and began
Illing. Mrs. Williams was shot and
Instantly killed. Turning his revol
ver on Mrs. Royal the frenzied man
H red nt her. dangerously wounding
her through tho thigh. As she foll
Manass turned the revolver on him
self. Placing tho pistol against, lils
hoad he sent a billie! crashing Into
lils forehead. With the gun still re
coiling from the first shot ho fired
a second bullet, which also took ef
fect in bis bead, lt ls said thal Ma
nass had been drinking for about, a
week.

As Hr. J. Robert Sewell was in the

rating room with William M. Cox, a

Cox sent a bullet crashing through
the physician's brain and then at
tempted suicide by shooting himself

Dr. Sewell was Instantly killed.

According to tho story Which tho
husband told last night, bis wife bad
been in the habit of taking morphine.
Two weeks ago she made an effort to
conquer ber craving for the drug and
bad apparently succeeded. About G
o'clock Sunday morning, Mr. Joseph
said, bis wife waked bim and asked
for morphine. Ho told ber that thor o
was none in the room. Mrs. Joseph
asked her husband about the tablets
in box on the bureau and be in
formed ber that they were strych
nine and not morphine. She replied
that they lasted exactly like mor
phine tablets,
His wife insisted,'.said Mr. Joseph,
that she must have morphine, so ho
got out of bed about 0,3.0 o'clock to
g<d some from a drug store, leaving;
his wife hy herself in the room.
He was unable lo purchase tho
drug without a prescription and soon
returned to bis room. There he found
bis wife writhing In agony and cry
ing that she was going to die.
