NOMINATED FOR GOVERNOR.
Georgia Convention Endorses Moke
Smith for Presidency.
Atlanta, Qa., Sept. l.- Former
Governor Hoke Smith "canto back"
politically to-day, when he was nom
inated for dovetonr ol (ieorgia and
endorsed for the Presidency of the
United States in 1912, by the State
Democratic Convention here. He
was nominated for Governor with
2:!3 votes, against 7S for Joseph M.
Brown, the present Governor, the
balloting being under the county
unit system. The resolution en
dorsing Mr. Smith for the Presidency
was adopted unanimously.
Some disorder attended the pre
sentation Of Governor Crown's
name as a candidate for tjie Guber
natorial nomination. Delegate
Griffith, of llaralson county, who
made the nominating speech, was
three times stopped hy jubilant
Smith shouters, finally leaving tho
lloor. Smith lenders made one last
appeal to their tuen to be quiet and
Grifllth was brought hack to resume
bis speech. Ile then announced that
be bad given thc only copy of it to
a newspaper man, and could not
finish. Enough of the speech al
ready bad been made, however, to
place the Governor's natue in nomi
nation.
Turill' baw Denounced.
The platform, which was unani
mously adopted, denounced and con
demned the Pay ne-Aid rich tariff law,
together with thc Republican admin
istration, for its "complete breach
of faith with tito American people."
The plat form doola res the Repub

promised, and increased burdens
were imposed. In pari the platform ,
declares :
"So monstrous a fraud has been
practiced on tito American people
that no further demonstration is
needed ol" the fact thal the Republi
can party '-an never be trusted to
give relief from tariff burdens."
Would Disfranchise Ignorant.
The disfranchisement of the igno
ran! and purchasable vote is endors
ed and one plank urges the same
protection tor foreign and domestic
corpora i ions as is accorded the Indi
vidual. A law prohibiting lobbying
and the ?limination of corporations
from politics is strongly urged. A
complet*? revision of rates lo and
from the ports ls endorsed and tho
platform unqualifiedly declares that
the Stale, with an extensive ocean
front, with four excellent ports,
Should receive I Ile benefits of snell a
situation, and declares that the "ar
bitrary ami excessive rates now ex
acted by the carriers aro unjust and
deprive the people of Georgia of
their natural advantages."
