Eleanor1 Huff, came in with lier
maid, Miss Nina Harper, both bcnu
tlfully, gowned, the brido wearing a
voil which swept the full length of
her long train, and carried a lovely
shower bouquet, The groom, .lames
Henry Harper, came in with his best
man, Wyly Scott, dressed In the
regulation black. Jot? Byrd prowd
an Ideal preacher and performed the
ceremony faultlessly. Tho wedding
was followed by tho presen tal ion of
the play, "Joe," by local talent, se
lected from tho boys and girls rang
ing from 8 to 1."? years. This was
well received also. The specialties
wore good, consisting of songs and
Instrumental numbers. Miss Doyle's
singing delighted tho largo audience
and she was repeatedly encored.

morning was al 10.95 and inside of

day's close), and at the highest fig
ure reached since the Civil war.

There were frequently 2? and 50
points between sales and only five
transad ions occurred on the advance

afterwards the price was forced up
to 2D cents lier pound, nearly $16 a
bale above the closing H gu re of Sat

highest price readied by any con
tract during the famous hull season

Anderson. Aug. 27.--Toni Lever
et t, who hears the reputation of be
ing tlie worst negro in Anderson
county, especially when drinking,
was shot and instantly killed hy
chief ol' Police Murphy and Patrol
man Shirley this afternoon when
they ai tempted to arrest him for
drinking and creating a disturbance.
The olllcers. in response to a po
lice call, went to (?ni?ee Leverett's
blacksmith shop and found that Tom
Leverett had secreted himself, well
armed, in a closet on the second
(loor of (lie shop. The Ohl CO I'S seve
ral times (ailed upon him to surren
der. Leverett refused to obey, and
said wi! li oat lis that lie expected to
lire if given an Opportunity'. When
tho doo*.' was opened Leverett threw
bis pistol directly in Olllcer Shirley's
tace and Chief .Murphy and Olllcer
Shirley opened lire, the shots being
tired through ti wooden partition.
Ci.ly Leverett's hand and his pistol
were in view.
Several shots were (ired and Lev-I

door. Leverett was in a crouching

since yesterday and this afternoon

sidewalk near where the homicide
occurred waving bis pistol in the air
and cursing loudly.
He had frequently been in i rouble.
The last serious trouble was the
shooting ol' Iiis wilt1, and for this act

St. .lames. Ho bore the trip well,
but his insistent plea to be allowed to
walk unaided resulted in three dis
tressing incidents. Once ho sank to
his knees as lie tried to enter au au
tomobile and in ascending the stops
of his home he foll on all fours from
ovor-exertlon. Despite his weakness,
however, he maintained his cheerful
mood, and, arriving at Deep Wells,
spent, the afternoon reclining iv a
choir on Ihe veranda.
Tue mayor left (he hospital at ft.?IO
o'clock this morning. Ile had been
lhere since Tuesday, A.ugUSt il, the
day on which he was shot by James
J. Gallagher, a discharged city em
ployee, on the deck of the steamship
Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse. Drawn
up in the court yard of the hospital
to give him a final salute were fifty
orphan children, cared for hy (he

typist, were accused jointly of tho
murder of Belle Lil more, Hie former's
wife, in tho formal charge read to
them In tho Row street pd]leo court.
Miss Loneve was charged also "with
harboring and maintaining Crippen
after the miine and while knowing
thal ho committed lt.
During tho proceed lugs, Inspector
Dow introduced evidence to show
that Crippon contemplated suicide,
while al sea, following bis light from
this country. Crippen was quoted
also as declaring thai his compan
ion knew nothing of Ibo trouble in
which he was involved, and Miss
Loneve was said to have protested
her hlnoncence.
There was special interest in tho
character of tho formal charge as
the Canadian warrant for he arrest
