the campaign meetings .inst ended
given voa the positions 1 will lake
on lojdslailon most likely to come
up at the next session ol' the Legisla

method of placing before you my
views upon the following questions:
I am heartily in favor of granting
liberal pensions to all homeless Fon
fed?rate soldiers and their widows,
consistent with their needs and the
ability of the tax-payers to pay.
If I am elected your Representa

to enact a law thai will furnish the
means and will require all mudholes
and gullies in the public roads to
be filled up; and Ibo small bridges to
be repaired during tho months of
February and August of each year;
thal will abolish the ellice of the
two ('(ninty Commissioners and give
the "boys" theil' salaries in payment
for work done on tho public roads.
I would favor and work for a law
that would .allow each township lo
elect an overseer, whose duty
it would bc to see that all roads
were pro pori y worked as above stat

bridges ami culverts were kimi in
proper repair at all times.
I would require thal the county
provides home for the Supervisor on
Ibo county poor farm, and that tho
Supervisor, when not otherwise en
gaged, should give tho farm lils per

the county steward; that it should
be the especial dut, ' ol' the Supervi

to superintend all permanent im

making relocations and macadamiz

lo overlook and superintend the work
of the various county overseers, and.
together with the Clerk of Court and
Auditor, become the auditing board
ol' all claims presented to the county
for payment.
I am in In vor of more liberal sup
port for the public schools, and am
In favor ol' adding Hie study ol' ag
riculture to the course of all schools
supported by the public funds.
I shall oppose willi all the power

the qtlftllflcntions ol' any voter, by
requiring the production ol' a reg

For twenty-four years I have vol

STA K V INO TO GAIN IIKAVEN.
Members of Queer Religious Scot
Forced to Break Fast.
Los Angulos, Aug. 20.-- Lying bil
pallets, too weak to move, detectives
lound to-day, in an arroyo bungalow,
four members of a queer new soot,
who were deliberately starving them
selves to death In anticipation of the
other world. There wore two tuon,
a woman and a girl. They bad not
touched a morsel of food for six
weeks, and for the last ton days bad
not stirred from their couches on tho
floor of a room that had hot been
aired since the long fast hogan. Last
night officers forced them to take
their first, nourishment-a pint of
milk divided among the four.
.lohn Irving O'Neill, one of the
four, said ho was thc* leader of the
sect, which ho called Disciples of tho
Holy Ghost, with tho gift of tongues,
and Invited the cur?Ws of Heaven
down on those who compelled thom
to break the fast.
"Th*' appearance ol tho comet was
the sign of the end of the world," he
said. ?"Wo are starving, because
fasting will gain us Heaven, and
there is no better way of getting to
Heaven than starving to death."
His companions, Mrs. Nellie RJ.
Doyle, aged 40, and .lames IO Butler,
an old man, declared that they had
willingly entered the death fast, but
the girl, Alice Priffoil, according to
the detectives, said she had been
I forced to starve and that she was
I (Utile willing to live.

MONEY IN I0L?OTIONS.
.Mc. Craig Explains Position Taken
During Campaign.
To My Friends, Former Support
ers and Voters Generally;
As I have had something to say
al several of the campaign meetings
against the usc of money lo influ
ence voles in an election, I desire!
to explain fully and honestly just
what I had in view by so doing. I
did not mean to conyoy tho dioa that
an office could bo bought in Oconce
county,.ybut 1 do mean to say that
it is unfair for ono man lo render in
I a full account pf the expense of his
campaign and other candidates'
friends using money for them and
presenting their accounts after the
election in order to evade tho law.
I am not trying to hold up any
particular person before the people
as a sinner, and am nol trying to do
any partie'lar person any harm, for
1 could have done that four years
ago. I have never Instructed a sin
gle person in my lifo to use any
money in my behalf, but on one or
two occasions, before the Legisla
ture passed thc act forbidding the
use ol' money, and when all the can
didates, from Congress down, spent
money, some accounts were present
ed to me and I paid them. After the
law was enacted forbidding the use
of money In an election 1 instruid ed
all my friends in plain and positive
language that I would not pay any
accounts that could not be included
ia my legitimate and sworn account.
I said on several stumps that it is
not right for a candidate to hire a
man lo go around and bet that he
will bc elected in order to make sen
timent in his favor, and I still say
so.
I have been accused of using just
simply "hot air." The candidates
all heard mo talk and had ample op
portunity lo ask for an explanation
I and demand names. I am able to
j defend all 1 have said at any time,
and If any man waals to kick he has
an opportunity.
j In conclusion, I want lo say that
I am making au honest race and will
appreciate thc support of the people
in i he coming primary.
Very respectfully,
* C. li. Craig.
