STARTS THREE-YEAR SIJNTENCE
H. Rudolph Rations Appeared at
Court-On County Works.
H. Rudolph Rabens, of Charleston
came to Walhalla last week, spend
ing several days al the Walhalla
Hotel. He came last week under a
misunderstanding as to the time for
Court to convene, and his visit was
for the purpose of surrendering him
self to the county authorities and-to
begin the serving of his three-year
sentence on the public works of the
county. This sentence was passed
by the 8e^'ons Court, after which
Rabens was released on a bond of
$5,000 pending appeal to the Su
preme Court. The lower Court was
sustained-and a new trial refuged.
Rabens was convicted of receiving
stolen goods in connection with the
now famous robbery of the Courte
nay Manufacturing Company, at
Newry, this county, in which McCar
thy, a noted safe-blower, and seve
ral other "yeggs" of equal promi
nence were the principals. Rabens
wns once a resident of Walhalla, but
left here when a youth and has oince
resided in Charleston, where he is
generally reputed to have acquired ,
some $50,000 or more-as proprie
tor of a "corner grocery," manager
of the Star Theatre, and in other
enterprises of similar character.
Monday afternoon Rabens left Wal
halla for the county poor farm,
where he will be with the county
hands for three years ?unless there ls
some change In the program before
that time.
Supervisor Mc Allst er refused to ac
cept Rabens on the county works, !
and requested that he be sent to ?.he ,
State penitentiary. It was finally ar
ranged, however, that Rabens is to
go on the county works, while his ;
$5,000 remains on deposit in the
People's Rank as a guarantee of
good behavior. In case of attempt I
to get away, ?ullenness, or the glv- j
lng of any trouble whatever by Ra
bens to the county overseers or Stew,
ard W. R. Cobb, the $5,000 guaran
tee is to be taken and forfeited to
the county. The deposit of $5,000,
which has been up as bond for his
4 appearance will remain In the fu
ture as guarantee of good behavior
while Rabens ls serving his three
years. lt ls understood that Rabens
is to receive the intert.it on the do
posit of $5,000.
Over Thirty-Five Years.
In 187 2 there was a great deal of j
diarrhoea, dysentery and cholera In- j
fantum. It was at this time that i
Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and
Diarrhoea ilemedy was first brought I
into use. It proved more successful
than any other remedy or treatment,
and has for thirty-five years main
tained that record. From a small
beginning its sale and use has ex
tended to every part of the United
States and to many ?prelgn coun
tries. Nine druggists out of ten will
recommend lt when their opinion is
asked, although they have other
medicines that pay them a greater
profit. It can always be depended
upon, even In the most severe and
dangerous cases. For sale by Dr.
J. W. Bell, Walhalla; W. J. Lun
ney, Seneca.

MISS HEARD ENTERTAINS.
Old Walhalla Hotel - Scene of Very
Happy Gathering Last Week.
"Miss Dollie Beard,,
At Home, " v
Friday Evening,
July Third.
From 9 to 12," . . '
It has been said, and we have often
thought truly, that all the curiosity
in the world had been given to, or
appropriated by, woman; but that is
not true, for in sr'te of the above an
nouncement, which was sent out to
the "smart set" of Walhalla's society
every single recipient, both women
and men, gathered at (he Walhalla
Hotel on the evening of July 3d to
see If it were really true, and no
one regretted that his inclination had
led him there.
Well, was she "at home?" To be
sure she was, and she seemed to be
expecting us all, too, for when one
went in the front door, there were
Mr. and Mrs. Otto Schumacher to
receive and conduct the guest to the
parlor. It was a pity we all decided
to go the same evening, for Miss
Dollie already had two of the most
charming young ladies there from
Pendleton-Mirses Sadie McPhail
and Louise Sloan; but you know how
nice Miss Dollie Is. She wouldn't
hurt any one's feelings for the world,
and made us all feel welcome, whe
ther we were or not.
Soon after we had all gotten there ;
she passed around little cards, upon
which were written new names for
us all. For example, a young lady
received a card, upon which she
found "Mr. Byron," and so ie young
man received one upon which he
found "Mrs. Byron." They were
then told to hunt their partners, j
These having been found, we were
told to sit down abd be quiet. Such j
an impossibility! Papers were then
dlstribut-d containing sixteen quos
Hons to be answered by Mr. and Mr?, i
So-and-So." This occupied the at- ?
tention of the guests for about twen- I
ty minutes, and if some of us had
waited till we answered all the ques- j
Hons we would have been there yet. ;
For instance:
"Why is on old maid like a wilted
apple? Because she ls hard to pair"
(pare).
"Which is the happiest of the
United States? The State of Matri
mony."
But Miss Annie/Verner and Jesse
Neville, Mrs. Stovall and Lucien
Maxwell were very apt and both !
couples answered all but one of the '
questions. The straws were pro- '
doced and the draw declared that
Mrs. Stovall and Mr. Maxwell were
the winners of the first prize. Who j
got the other? Oh, don't ask us j
that; they do not want us to tell.
The potato carrying contest was
a source of much amusement and was
indulged in by most of those present.
While we were yet in the midst of
the excitement caused by the mental
and bodily exercises we had just
finished, delicious cream and cuke
began to appear on the scene as if
by magic, and while lt lasted there
was a strange stillness throughout
the building.
We heard a man say the other day
that in his young days the "old Ble
mann Hotel" was the scene of many
happy events such as are not known
now a days. But if they had any
better times In that day than we did
the other evening, we are glad we did
not live then, for we would have died
with joy. and we are not yet ready
for that-especially if there is any
probability of Miss Beard's being
"At Home" soon again.
The Remedy that Does.
"Dr. King's New Discovery is the
remedy that does the healing others
promise but fail to perform." says
Mrs. E. R. Pierson, of Auburn Cen
tre, Pa. "It is curing me of throat
and lung trouble of long standing,
that other treatments relieved only
temporarily. New Discovery is do
ing mo so much good that I feel
confident its continued uso for
reasonable length of time will restore
me to perfect health." This renown
ed cough and cold remedy and throat
and lung healer ls sold at an drug
gists. 50c. and $1, Trial bottle free.
Hig Picnic nt Cross Roads.
We are requested to announce that
there will be a big picnic (in connec
tion with the campaign meeting) at
CroBs Roads on July 18th. Ample
arrangements are being made, so
that all will have an enjoyable time,
and nothing will be spared to make
every one comfortable. An urgent
invitation ls extended to the gene
ral public and a special Invitation ls
extended to the people of the South
Union, Fair Play, Townville, Oakway,
Earle's ?J, Friendship and Return
communities to be present. You
should go. It will prove an enjoyable
occasion.
Rest the World Affords.
"It gives me unbounded pleasure
to recommend Bucklen's Arnica
Salve," says J. W. Jenkins, of Chapel
HUI. N. C. "I am convinced it's the
best salve the world affords. It
I cured a felon on my thumb, and it
' never falls to heal every Bore, burn
or wound to which lt ls applied." 25c.
