. COMRADES OF THE OLD *
? GUARD, ATTENTION ! ?
The r?union of the Confederate
veterans will be held in Greenville in
August. And Greenville invites
every one of these gray-headed fel
lows from the mountains to the Bea
to be present. They want to see
agaiu the men who followed Lee,
Jackson, Longstreet, Forrest and
Morgan. This alone will clothe you
with fadeless renowu. The air will
be lade*' with benedictions for you.
Every countenance will be full of
pleasure at your presence; the elec
tric currents will whisper to you
kindliest greetings;, and with one
acclaim nature and man will bid you
truest welcome. They may not
know you ore a part of that superb
host who wore the grey. And,
then, you will greatly enjoy being
,there. You will see men there who1
made history at Shiloh, who charged
up Malvern Hill, who swept along
the valley of the Chlckamauga, who
defended Atlanta in the matchless
contest of eighty days; and who, at
Franklin- that terrible and awful
ho'.ocause-here ' you will .see men
who quailed not at the destruction
of Antietam, who held the Angle at !
Cold Harbor, who marched with
Jackson ?round Chancellorsville,who I
eh?rged up the rocky sides of Cettya- |
burg. You will see men there who
refused to advance until the Immor
tal Lee rode a ?way from danger at
the Wilderness, and then, with a
wild and resistless dash, drove the
enemy frdm the field. Men will be
there who stood at the Petersburg
Crater, and yielded at Appomattox
because they were overpowered, but
their unconquerable wills could not
be destroyed.
There will be those who wore re
nown at Ked River, Baton Rouge,
Corinth, Springfield and Elkhorn.
What magnificent memories we in
voke and what chivalrous records
we recall, what superb pageB of hu
man history we read over again in
"these magic words, which uplift Sou
thern courage and magnify Ameri
can manhood!
The South fought four years, but
these four years contain the grand
est and most sublime pages of our
republic's history. Blot out these
and all they mean, and they leave
blank the proudest memories of a
great nation.
From defeat we won imperishable
renown. Losing, we have crowned
our dead nailon, Its heroes and Its
living people, with a glorious im
mortality. Wonderfully illustrious
record! There are no stains on Hie
Southern shield. Confederate men
and women did all they could do.
They were defeated, not because they
were wrong or unfaithful in any re
spect whatever, but because an over
ruling Providence decreed their
<,ow niall In the solution of a divide
policy for the government of the
world, into which human ken cannot
pierce or venture. But this does not
dim the splendor of their heroism,
in the glory of their patriotism, or
the grandeur 01 their sacrifice,
i A short while ago we looked at a
Confederate monument, tall and
beautiful. It has upon lt only three
words, "Our Confederate Dead."
Let us ever keep them fresh upon
the pages o.* memory. There are
thousands of them. Many sleep In
unknown graves, but they are ours.
These dead came from homes Jn
Florida, where the roses never fade
and the flowers never cease to
bloom; from the mountains and
bills of Georgia, who are patriotic
and true; from North und South Car
olina, where the mingling of the rich
blood of the Huguenot and the An
glo-Saxon creates a knightly man
hood worthy of every call which
duty makes: and fnom Virginia,
whose soil drank so much blood of
her precious dead, whose sons por
trayed a valor and chivalry worthy
of the cavaliers from whom they
sprang. They are dead, but their
intrepidity, constancy and fearless
ness, will forever shine on the es
cutcheon of their Commonwealth
With a brilliancy and glory which no
future can pale and no consecration
surpass.
Last, but not least, comrades, you
will see women of the South who
passed through the desrtuclion and
horrors of war and military inva
sion; from whose pure and tender
bosoms no word of complaint ever
arose; who made truest, grandest
and noblest offerings for the South;
who did lt without question, who
did it without regret, and whose loy
alty and devotion to the Southern
cause will ever stand out in history
as the most beautiful example of
womanly courage, womanly patience,
and womanly self-sacrifice
Who bade us go, with amiling tears,
Watched, cheered, then wept and
prayed.
And the Daughters of the Confede.
racy-God bless them every one! -
these sepulchers they guard with
ceaseless care, and wreathe the
graves with the only crowns that
they can bring-their flowers, their
tears, their prayers, their praise and
their love. This they do without
sword or flag, and with soundless
tread.
We will give you Roosevelt's trib
ute to Lee: "The world has never
seen better soldiers than those who
followed Lee, and their lender will
- undoubtedly rank, without any ex
ception, as the greatest of all the
great captains that the Engllsh
8peaklng people have brought forth;
and he can claim to stand na the full
equal of Marlboro or Wellington."

with the ship.
Mo?t of the passengers on the
Larache were r?sidents of Argentina
Rep?blica. The Larache was little
more than an old tub and proved a
veritable death trap when she struck
on the rocks near Muros. She sank
in a'few minutes, leaving the pas
sengers and crew struggling in the
water. The small boats on the Lara
che were either smashed or capsized.
Fishing imats in the neighborhood
rushed to the. .rescue, but a heavy
fog seriously interfered with their
work. The fishermen succeeded In
rescuing 65 persons.
in addition to the captain, the
ship's doctor and first officer were
drowned.
The disaster occurred at 5 o'clock
in the morning and the most of those
saved are without clething. It ls
feared that all of the 85 missing were
drowued.
It bas been ascertained that the
number of passengers and crew of
the Larache totaled one hundred and
fifty. Sixty-five persons are known
to have been saved, but the fate of
the other 85 ls not known, and it ls
feared that most of them perished.

New Use for Cotton Seed Meal.
(Toccca, Ga., Record.)
? gentleman told us the other day
that moonshiners in this county were
actually making whiskey out of cot
ton seed meal. One hag, containing
about two bushels, will make seven
gallons of as vile stuff as ever went
down a man's throat. It is retailed
at $3 a gallon, and it can be seen
what a nice profit Is made. A little
potash is added to make the stuff
"bead" and you have something that
will knock the dust out of your
throat, also take the skin off wher*
ever lt touches. So a new use has
been found for cotton seed meal other
than for feeding cattle.

Slam hi Farm Scientifically.
A farmer in Ohio wrote to the De
partment of Agriculture that he had
struggled for twenty years on an
eighty-acre farm, heavily mortga
ged, but had been unable to reduce
his debt or rise above, poverty that
made the bringing up of his family a
humiliation. He asked if there was
any hope for him upon the farm, or
if he might as well give up the fight.
The department requested that he
make a detailed report of his farra
and Its soils, and upon this lt. based
a plan of farming which he was rec
ommended to follow to the letter.
There was a profit the first year of
$2,000, and the department believes
that ultimately the despised eighty
acres can be made to yield $5,000 a
year.
