THE FAULT OF "SMARTNESS."
Do not be "smart." Whenever you"
see any of your mates showing signs
of "smartness" In lils work, his talk
or his play, take him by tho hand, or
both hands, or by the back of the
neck, If necessary, and lovingly,
playfully, but firmly, lead him to a
knowledge of higher and more Inter
eating things.
"In the light of recent events" the
above quotation from Kipling's abun
dant store of knowledge of men and
things, and the proper manner of
handling both, may not be amiss.
If, 1'owevor, we aro going into the
business of censoring others' acts,
and constituting ourselves Judges of
who and what is "smart," let us be
very caroful in the matter-espe
cially If we attempt to follow to the t
letter Mr. Kipling's advice to "take
him by the hand, or both hands, or
by the back of the neck, If neces
sary," and thus load the way to "a
knowledge of higher and more Inter
esting things." lt might even be
well when we advance to the last
?tcp and go at lt "by tho back of the
neck," to consider somewhat the rel
ative merits of muscle, lost this good
humor be turned into pathos, with
Ourselves well to the fore on the pa
thetic side. Even eliminating this
more strenuous side of the question,
which ls fraught with no end of latent
possibilities, may wo not be equally
"smart" In the eyea of those we seek
to correct, by criticism, by Insinua
tion or "by the back of the neck,"
and ourselves merit even more than
wo can glvo our "smart" friend?
Kipling's advice ls good, and Kipling
doubtless would be able to practice
it without bringing himself In for
adverse criticism. Unfortunately we
are not all Kiplings. Let us consider
well, therefore, before we attempt to
follow bis advice, lest we get only to
the point of taking our erring friend
by the hand, when we find ourselves
taken suddenly-possibly rudely-by
the back of the neck.
Republican Nominee Sherman ls
Buffering from a bilious attack. The
Republican party seems to be In the
Kaine fix.
Nicholas Tschalkovsky ls now held
nt St. Petersburg on a charge of
high treason. Tschalkovsky-the
name smacks of treason; that ls, If
lt smacks of anything or spells any
thing.
