TALLULAH FALLS MENACED. %
By Tho?. P. Ryan's Deal-Will Ute
Forests Be Slaughtered?
(Atlanta Georgian.)
Ia beautiful Tallulah Falls to give
place to a dry ravine?
Or will the national government
step in and protect the falls by es
tablishing a forest reserve?
A powerful syndicate, backed by
Thomas Fortune Ryan and his mil
lions, is said to be negotiating the
purchase of timber lands above the
falls. The tract to be bought is a
strip extending four mijes on each
side ot the river above the falls and
ten miles up the stream. The land
is covered "1th valuable timber, and
if this ls cut lt will'destroy the na
tural watershed above the falls and
the ralus will cut their way through
other courses. It will be only a few
years until the. falls. will disappear
or bo reduced to a puny stream.
It ls believed, however, that the
Ryan interests contemplate Cutting
the timber at an early date.- The
syndicate ta making enormous pur
?bases of timber lands in West Vir
ginia and in several Southern States,
some of the tracts purchased being
far from a railroad and not immedi
ately available for timber. The same
Interests are building the Clinch
river railway and planning other rail
road Improvements in the South, and
it is believed they are investing in
timber lands in order to "salt away"
a large part of the immense Ryan
holdings In something more substan
tial than Wall street stocks.
It is confidently expected that the
next Congress will pass the forest
reserve bill and open the way for the
conservation of . natural resources.
Besides being one of the beauty spots
of the South, Tallulah Falls is on? of
the most splendid water powers in
Georgia. If the forestry bill becomes
a law, steps probably will be eakeu
at once to provide for the purchase
of such land;; above the falls as will
insure protection from timber cut
ting and ! destruction of the water
power possibilities.

unusual manner. The boys were out

RHETT ANNOUNCES FOR SENATE
Charleston's Executive Make? Formal
Statesmen*/-Solicits Support.
Charleston, June 10.-Mayor
R .ett announced his candidacy to
night for United States Senator.
Following a conference at his of
fice at the People's National Bank
he gave out the following statement:
"To the Democratic votera of
South Carolina: I have determined
to be a candidate for United States
Senator at the approaching primary
election. I shall to-morrow file my
pledge with the State Democratic
committee as required by the rules
of the party and will abide by the
rules . of the primary election. I
respectfully solicit the support of
Democratic voters of the State.
"R. Goodwin Rhett."
The annouueement of the candi
dacy of Mayor Rhett will be in the
nature of a surprise to the voters of
the .State, and his name has not
heretofore been mentioned in connec
tion with the office. He and Ex
Governor Heyward have been close
business and personal friends for
years and with the decision of the
latter to forego making the race on
account of his health, Mayor Rhett
decided to enter the race.
Further than the statement given
above Mayor Rhett said to-night that
he had nothing to say, but that in the
next few days he will probably make
a statement.
Mayor Rhett is one of the best
known and regarded men in the
State and it is admitted that his can
didacy is a strone one. He is one of
tho most successful business men in
Charleston, having large financial in
terests, but these have not interfered
with a close study of public ques
tions and on these matters he is par
ticularly well qualified to discuss
and make the race for the office that
he seeks. He was a delegate at large
to the Democratic National Conven
tion four years ago.
He entered upon his second admin,
istration a-, mayor of Charleston last
December, after having served seve
ral terms as an alderman and has
held other .positions of public trust.
Mayor Rhett has spoken before com
mercial organizations in Columbia,
Anderson and other cities in the In
tered of the State, where he has
many strong friends and supporters.
His discussions of financial and rail
road questions have especially im
pressed his knowledge of matters of
the kind. This was particularly in
evidence in the consideration given
to bis views recently on the pro
posed reform of currency legislation
by government officials and writers
on financial matters.
Mayor Rhett is a good speaker and
he promises to make a hard fight for
the office that he seeks. He will en
deavor to enlighten the public on the
questions of the day and will make
the race on his merit rather than on
any attack on opposing candidates. It
ls thought that he will get a good
portion or Heyward's strength
throughout the State.
