THE TIME TO ACT.
The campaign of 19 08 Is now on.
The candidates for oftlce are announc

and it ls up to tho voters to deter

What competency and Intelligence
each shall have. For tho ensuing

Extra\lgance and graft have run
rife In this State of late, and the only
way to remedy this evil ls to elect
efficient/and honest men to office.
Wlfje l?gislation can only be had
through wiso, practical men in the

people.
Let us select good, conscientious
men to fill all the offices, county and
State. It ls the time now to act. lt

DELEGATES SHOULD GO FREE.
South Carolina's Delegation Compos
ed of Honorable Men.
Columbia, May ?.-Senator Till
man is still as much opposed to the
idea of instructing delegates as he
has ever been. He now thinks it
Will make but little material differ
ence in the result, but on a general
principle he ls opposed to Instructing
delegates from South Carolina be
cause he thinks the delegates from
this State will be men who can ab
solutely be trusted.
lt ls his argument that If the dele
gates from this State ware men who
were under the domination or con
trol of a "boss," or if they were
men who could be bought or im
properly influenced, then lt would he
all right to have Instructed delegates,
but with such delegations as are sent
from this State he thinks it alto
gether wrong to send Instructed del
egates.
It Is his opinion that Mr. Bryan
Will bP nominated, and he ls strongly
of the opinion that Mr. Bryan will
be elected unless Roosevelt should
be renominated. He thinks Mr.
Bryan can heat any other man than
Roosevelt, In the Republican party,
and If the Democrats could get a
Cleveland-not Mr. Cleveland In per
son, but a man who stood for the
name things and could command the
support that Cleveland does-"lt
would be a shame to take the

A Tribute of IJOVC.
Fell asleep in Jesus on the evening
of April 19th, Susie, the beloved wife
of S. R. Hubbard.
Although shut In by lil health for
many years from joining in the plea
sures of her companions, she was al
ways bright and cheerful. Being of a
particularly sweet and affectionate
disposition, her friends who visited
her came away benefited by the in
fluence of her patient resignation un
der the severest bodily pain. Her
constant thoughts and talk were of
her Saviour. Sile seemed to feel a
comforting assurance of His con
stant presence and love.
Her death had no sting, the grave
no terror. To those left behind she
leaves an example of deep and abid
ing faith, of patient resignation un
der affliction and the fullest trust in
the Saviour.. Although afflicted she
was an earnest worker.
Her body was laid to rest on Tues
day evening in the churchyard of the
New Hope Baptist church, of which
she was a member. Rev. W. C. Sea
born conducted the funeral services.
Her family have our deepest affec
tionate sympathy.
She has passed from this world of
sin and pain to the land of eternal
rest. She may not come to us. but lt
is a sweet and comforting thought
that we can go to her.

I'M:;,CK A CANDIDATE AGAIN.
The Story of Parker's Famous "Gold
Telegram" Will be Revived.
New York, May 9.-The astonish
ing information has been received in
some exclusive Democratic circles
here that Judge Alton B. Parker is
prepariug to 'announce himself, or
have his friends make the announce
ment for him, that he will be a candi
date for the nomination before the
Denver convention.
lt ls said that a flood of literature
ls being prepared, the effect of which,
lt ls hoped, will be to turn Demo
cratic thought once more in the di
rection ot the sage of Esopus.
Just why Judge Parker's name
should be brought out at this late
day cannot be satisfactorily ex
plained by those who have endeav
ored on their own account to solve
the problem. But that lt ls to be
done seems a certainty, and it is the
impression among the few who have
learned of this secret, that the
t. lends of Judge Parker hope
through the mere revival of tho story
of his famous "gold" telegram to
the convention of 1904 and a eulogy
of the man, to center Democratic
attention upon him to the end that
his nomination may be brought
about if Bryan does not dominate
the convention from the very outset.
With regard to Judge Gray and
others, who have been named from
the East, lt ls claimed they will not
be supported by Western Demo
crats because they refused to support
Bryan In 189fi. Judge Parker did
support Bryan, and If Bryan cannot
win the nomination this time he
might be persuaded to throw his
strength to Parker. At all events,
the former candidate ls to be brought
Into publicity as an available man.
