FATHER SHOOTS DAUGHTER. Once 1*1 ominen! New York Physician Fatally Wounds His Child. Asheville, N. C., April 15.-En raged at his 16-year-old daughtor, Nellie, becauso of a harmless school girl prank, Dr. C. O. Swlnney, who recently came hero from Now York, fired two shots at her, fatally wound ing tari and then turining the revol ver ?<n himself, he placed the muzzle in his mouth and pulled tho trigger, dying almost instantly. Badly wound ed as s.vo was, with two bullets em bedded in her skull, Miss Swlnney ran fron tho room and upstairs to the principal'?? room before she fell. The tragedy occurred In the recep tion room of the Normal and Colle giate Institute, a largo girls' board ing school in thlH city, where Miss Swlnney had been a pupil for the pasl session. Just what occurred prior to the shooting is not known, as there were no witnesses, and the girl, while still conscious, could give but a vague account. Dr. Swlnney, who up to a few yearB ago had been a prominent physician In New York city, has for some time been In poor health, and of late, lt ls alleged, his mind had been unbalanced. When Dr. Swlnney called on his daughter at the school this afternoon about 3 o'clock he was shown Into the reception room, and a few min utes later his daughter came down and went Into the room, closing the door behind her. She sat down at the plano, her father sitting beside her. Half an hour later girls and teachers were startled by four shots ringing out, and a second afterwards Miss Swlnney. with blood streaming from the wounds in her head, cimc rushing from the room. In a few minuets the wildest confusion reign ed, school girls and women teachers running here and there, but Miss Robinson, the principal, speedily re stored order and hastily summoned a physician. Miss Swlnney was desperately wounded and there ls little chance for her recovery. The room In which the tragedy oc curred showed signs of a hard strut" . gie. Chairs were overturned, and the plano stool, with one leg broken, was lying in thc middle of the room. The father was lying on the floor at one side of the room, face downward, with the revolver, with four cham bers empty, under him. The attempted mulder and suicide were evidently deliberately planned, as before going to the school Dr. Swlnney bought a revolver and two rounds of cartridges at a pawn shop. Although It is said that his mind has been unbalanced for some time, he had never been violent, and his family were totally unprepared for the dreadful tragedy. He was the father-in-law of Dr. J. A. Sinclair, a prominent dentist of this city, and since his return from New York a few weeks ago, Dr. Swlnney had mude his home with him. S. L. Bowen, of Wayne, W. Va., writes: "I was a sufferer from kid ney disease, so that at time? I could not stand straight. I took Foley's Kidney Cure. One dollar bottle and part of the second cured me entire ly." Pat took his pencil and wrote under the Inscription, Where you are now I wish you well. If up in Heaven or down in Hell, But to foller you I'll not consent, l'nles8 I know which way you went. Lo, the goddess of all wisdom sits upon her throne, Pouring out her vial of wisdom as she used to do in Rome; She li.is changed In her great good ness; she now deals with partial hand, For she pours most all her wisdom down upon fair Bounty Laud. From that land of untold wisdom pomes a voice o'er hill and dale, Bringing us some profound message, which with joy we always hail. Yesterday that voice came to us, with a message harsh and cold, Scolding us for beli\g little, scoffing us for being old. That most wond'rous of all pinces which the gods have ever seen ls the one spot of this earthdom which we bow to as our queen. High above us In the heavens, up upon her golden throne, She sits judging all the people who by her were ever known. Alas! we children of the dust, placed under condemnation, Seek forgiveness of our queen-a glo rious consolation! We would not seem impudent, we are all by nature meek To be forgiven of our sins; this only do we humbly seek. We know that we are very small ; our smallness is our shame; And yet we love our little town and glory in her name. lt ls said that little ones should be seen, but never heard, Yet the smallest, when ill-treated, will complain with some small word. In shame we heard the harsh rebuke; in meekness we submit; For 'twas the Judgment of our queen; wo dared not question lt. 'Twas from the Hps of our fair queen, the fairest of all queens A queen whose courtiers are her ploughmen, whose livery is blue jeans. Few are blest ns we are blest to look upon a queen so fair A queen who of her boundless knowl edge to her subjects gives a share. When she speaks forth her great knowledge, we fall stricken to the ground By the greatness of her wisdom, which exists alone In sound. Hall our queen, fair Bounty Land! Most noble Bounty Land! Thou'rt the rarest known creation of that eroater Master Hand; For thy greatness ls most marvel, and thy smallness more so still. For thy smallness can thy greatness all consume at Its own will. We would see thy noble greatness; 'tis to this we would be led, But alas! thy marvel greatness lies within thy marvel head; And of all themarv'lous marvels that we ever marvelled at, I That is the most novel marvel that we marv'lers marvel at. "Greatness comes with greater wis dom," so the prophets say of old. But we beg to be forgiven, If In dif fering we are bolo. For the bounteous '.lountiness of this bounteous Bounty Land Would be greater with less wisdom, such as flows through that fair land. -Harry R. Hughs. That languid, lifeless feeling that comes with spring and early sum mer can be quickly changed to a feeling of buoyancy and energy by the judicious use of Dr. Shoop's Re storative. The Restorative ls a gen uine tonic to* tired, run down nerves, and but a few doses ia needed to satisfy the user that Dr. Shoop's Re storative is actually reaching that tired spot. The indoor life of win ter, nearly always; leads to sluggish bowels and to sluggish circulation in general. The customary lack of ex ercise and outdoor air ties up the liver, stagnates the kidneys and oft times weakens the heart's action. Use Dr. Shoop's Restorative a few weeks and all will be changed. A few days' test will tell you that you are using the light remedy. 1 You will easily and surely note the change irom day to day. Sold by J. W. Bell. Rev. Bridewell I)ismiH.sed. Wednesday's election causes the pendulum to swing back to the dry cause. The result Wednesday was the eli mination of a campaign which has been hotly waged for a fortnight or more, in which both sides used the columns of the local press freoly, and the opponents of license held many mass meetings, addressed by widely known prohibition advocates.
