Capt. Dendy and son are well, but

have paid a brief visit to relatives
and friends In Texas. Their many

Sureau, a column of matter devot
ed to the interests of farmers gen
erally and members of the union in
particular. These matters aro well
handled by him, and nearly all tho
county papers of the State publish
them weekly. The Courier has con
tinuously used them since tho fea
ture of the union was originated.

nounces the arrival of a young gen
tleman, by name Thomas Taylor Ai
ken, at his home in Abbeville, on the
24th instant. He ls reported to have
brought nothing Into the world with
him except one good-sized "Rebel
Yell." Congratulations are extended
to the genial Congressman and his
family.
-The Courier force has been con
siderably crippled for the past three
weeks owing to the continued ab
sence of Mr. Schroder, our linotype
operator, on account of the illness o''
his little son. With our book-keeper
playing on the keys of the machine,
a job artist reading proof, and all
taking a hand In the "devil's", work,
we feel justified in asking pardon for
whatever there may have taken place
in the way of short-comings.

school at this place is in a flourishing
condition under tho management of
Miss Bertie Jones. She has an en
rollment of about 6 4. They had
a valentine party at the school house
on February 14th, and thore were
469 valentines put in the box. Little
Misses Irene Elrod and Marie Bogga
received the most-the former 36
and the latter 35.
Mis Fannie Lark, of Easloy, is
visiting relatives and friends in this
section this week.

Miss Earlie Kelley, the teacher of
the Wolf Stake school, invited our
school at New Hope up to her school
last Friday evening to take in the
closing exercises, and to have a spell
ing bee between the pupils of the
two schools. Each teacher selected
sixteen of her best spellers. They
were all spelled down on both sides
except two of the Wolf Stake spell
ers and three from New Hope. Just
at this point Miss Kelley became
suddenly sick, and this sad event
broke up the spelling bee without
determining which side was victor
ious.
The first part of the exercises,
consisting of music, recitations and
songs and dialogues, did credit to
both teacher and pupils
