WALHALLA, S. C.:
WEDNESDAY, FEB! 2?, 1008.
MATTERS IN THE SENATE.
Senator J. R. Karlo Writes of Some
Things Public and Private.
The following letter from Senator
J. R. Earle reached The Courier too
late for publication iast week, as
we had gone to press before its re
ceipt:
Columbia, Feb. 18.-Special: The
Senate last night, by a vote of 17
to 16, continued ?.ne bill to reduce
tho railroad fare to 2% cents, so
that the old rate will stand. It is
imposible to say why this Anal vote
was changed In favor of the rail
roads. The bill passed its second
reading by a vote of 18 to 14.
The bill introduced by me to allow
Circuit Judges to order extra terms
of the Circuit Court in the counties
in the Circuit has passed its sec
ond reading in the Senate, which
Insures its passage if it can get
through tho house.
The two bills I got through the
Senate a year ago to prevent unfair
discrimination by the Standard Oil
Company, and providing for the in
spection of oils, is still on the house
calendar. I have urged and begged
that they be taken up, but so far
have not succeeded. My friends
over there say they will pass them,
but the time ls getting dangerously
short.
In response to many inquiries, I
desire to say that I will be a candi
date for re-election to the Senate
this year, trusting that my course
. has been in harmony with the wishes
of the people, and that they will see
flt to elect me for a second term.
The twelve-circuit bill has finally
passed, and we have to elect two
more Judges.
It looks as though we will have
en 'nsurance commissioner with nts
coterie of attaches.
The following appointments have
been made for Oconee county:
. W. A. Barron, W. W. Burley and
W. T. Grubbs, Supervisors of Reg
istration.
Magistrates-W. H. Talley, D. P.
Grant, J. B. Marett and W. N. Wool
bright. Respectfully,
J. R. Earle.

Are You Sure Your Kidneys are
Well ?
Many rheumatio attacks are due to
uric acid in the'blood. But tho duty
of the kidneys is to remove all uric
acid from the blood. Its presence
there shows the kidneys are Inactive.
Don't dally with "uric acid solvents."
You might go on until doomsday
with - them, but until you cure the
kidneys you will never get well.
Donn's Kidney Pills jiot only remove
uric acid, but cure the kidneys and
then all danger from uric acid is
ended.
Rupert B. Calvo, bookbindor, em

Carolina, living at 1010 Lumber St.,
Columbia, S. C., says: "I thought I
had rheumatism and was treated tor
it on that belief. I usod all kinds of
liniments. The pain was in my back
and in my hips clear to the shoul
ders. The liniments did no good,
and I took to blood medicines, but
they did not help rae. I took a long
trip in hopes that the change of cli
mate might help rae. I heard of
Doan's Kidney Pills and determined
to try them, and got a box at a drug

pain? out of my back, and I have not

MONUMENT TO DR THOKNWRLL
Movement was Starteil nt tho Meet
lng of Py tithing in Walhalla.
(Greenville News, 20th.)
At the district convention of th?
Knights of Pythias held in Walhall*
on Tuesday a resolution was adopted
calling upon the Pjinians of th?
State to raise a sum^of not less than
$10,000 for the purpose of erecting
a monument to the memory of th?
late Dr.- James HY Thornwell, whc
was at tho time of his death Grand
Keeper of RecordB and Seal. Th?
resolution authorized tho District
Deputy Grand Ohancbellor to appoint
a committee* consisting of one mem
ber from each lodge in the district
to ruiBe the amount which this dis
trict should contribute to the fund.
lt, is thought that the other dis
trict conventions in the State will
agree to the resolution, and that
the money will bo raised without
any trouble- T*e selection of a plac?
for the monument was not men
tioned in the resolution, and this will
be decided later. Dr. Thornwell wat
closely identified with Pythianlsm,
and in his death the order sustained
a great loss.
In addition to the resolution above
named one was adopted expressing
great regret at the death ot the
Grand Keeper of RecordB and Seal
md paying a beautiful tribute to
his lifo and character. A copy ol
this resolution will be spread upon
the minutes and published in the
press.
The Greenville delegates to thc
convention returned to the city yes

the local lodges: J. J. McSwalu, Dr.
J. P. Carlisle, R. J. McCorrigan, R.
M. Mauldin, Jos. A. McCullough and
Proctor A. Bonham. ?
The next convention will bo- held
in Greenville ia August, and local

this a most profitable as well as a
pleasant meeting.
The convention at Walhalla was
greatly enjoyod by the delegates,
and that city entertained the visit

speeches at the banquet were splen

business sessions of the convention
were held in the corning and after
noon.
District' Deputy Grand Chancellor
Park A. Dallas will announce the

The young man was spelling forth
to the young lady in tender tones
when she looked at him in a most

"What is love, anyway, Charlie?"
