Whitaker, inspector of polio?, enter ed the office ot the Morning World here to-night and fired two shots at Joseph M. Leveque, the editor. Nei - ther shot took effect. The shooting to-night followed several attacks upon Whitaker in the "editorial ?nd news columns of the World. The head of the New Or leans police department was criti cised for "attending the races dally 'while drawing a salary of $6,000 a ?year from the people," and was re ferred to as "a blackguard and a kully." Whttakc-, accompanied by several detectives, entered the editorial motes of the World shortly after 8 'o'clock, and the inspector started for Leveque, who was talking at the time to a young woman reporter. Blows were exchauged, and it was then that Whitaker drew a large caliber revol ver and fired twice. Washington, Jan. 16.-A resolu tion, reading in part as follows, was offered in the House to-day by Mr. Edwards, of Georgia: "Whereas, people and business in stitutions of all kinds are suffering from the panic that is upon us. and .tho whole country is demanding that ?something be done for relief, and, "Whereas, the House of Represen "int ives has now been in session for .over thirty days and has accomplish .ed absolutely nothing along these lines, but Instead is ki.'i'ng time up on matters that are not nearly so -vital; therefore, be it "Resolved, That 9 o'clock In the morning be fixed as the hour for .convening;, instead of 12 o'clock m., ?nd that the hour from 1 until 2 be sallowed for lunch, and that the House remain in session until 6 <oTclook in the afternoon,, or later if necessary,. Miss Poore is the laughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Poore and the coremony will fafej held at their residence. Mr. and Mrs. Geer will return to Anderson probably to-morrow. The Next Cotton Congress. ?Manchester, Eng., Jan. 16.-The International Cotton Federation has .decided to hold Its next Congress in Paris, beginning June 1st. It is ex pected that a large delegation of cot ton growers and manufacturers will ..attend from tho United States. Five Drowned. (Prom a Laurens Din patch.) News has betta received here of tho death in Philadelphia of W. E. Lucas, president of the Watts Cotton Mill. Mr. Luoas went to Philadel phia about a week ago for treatment and lt wa? thought that he -was got tlv, -< along nicely. Yesterday after noon his wife together with Dr. R. H. Hughes, left for Philadelphia, and at this time are on their way and prob ably have not heard of the death. A life of remarkable activity has been brought to a close. W. E. Lu cas more than any other one man has been influential in the up-build ing ot Laurens. Several years ago ho came here from Spartanburg and succeeding in building the Laurens Cotton Mill and later the Watts Mill. He was for several years president of three mills, tho two here and also the Darlington Manufacturing Co. He held this position until about three years ago when he undertook to dispose ot tho producta of his mills at a lower per cent t?ian he bad been paying. Then it was that the Millikens got controlling Interest in the Laurens Mill and Darlington mill aud removed Mr. Lucas from the presido ney. He then gave his en tire attention to the Watta Mill since which time the Watts Mill stock has advanced from about 80 to 140. W. E. Lucas was considered by many one of the very best cotton mill men in the South. Mr. Lucas was a son of Dr. B. S. Lucas, of Darlington, S. C., and was 55 years old. He married Miss Cora Cox, of Nashville, Tenn., and besides her, leaves two children. The funeral will take place at Spartanburg to morrow and a number of his per sonal friends from here will attend. He leaves an estate estimated at $200,000 or more. Besides stock in several mills he has about $130,000 life insurance, which ls distributed in quite a number of companies. Mr. Lucas was in every sense strict ly a business man, and he command ed the respect and admiration of all who knew him. _ Disturbed tho Congregation. Port Au Prince, Haiti, Jau. 16. A serious, earthquake has occurred at Qonalves, 66 miles northwest of this city. A few houses have been destroyed and others were damaged. No loss of life has been reported. Communication with the town la broken. The shocks continue. The first was followed by a tidal wave. Among the buildings destroyed are the commercial houses of Herrmann and Jollbert. Thomas, arrested here on January 8 on a war rant from Lima, Ohio; charging him with making and passing counterfeit silver coins in Ohio towns, near that place, was taken to Cleveland this morning by secret service operatives for trial. He admltte 1 his guilt and asked to be taken back. Lantz was a member of a gang who operated freely in Ohio, making halves and dollars. Two of the mem bers are already in Ohio Jails await ing trial.
