Hit by Blue Ridge at Belton.

Allen Gantt, a young white man,
was struck by a Blue Ridge train in
the Belton yard about 7 o'clock Sat
urday night. He waa sitting on the
side of the track when the train
backed across the yard to turn
around. His head was somewhat
.bruised up, but his wounds are not
necessarily dangerous. Conductor
Fredericks and Engineer Keith were
in charge of the train. Gantt ls em
ployed in the Belton Cotton Mills.

FOUND DEAD IN WOODS.
Dody of Nathan Deaton, SO Years of
Age, Was Found.
The body of Nathan Deaton, 80
years of age, was found dead In the
woods in the Long Creek section of
Oconee on Tuesday. December 81st,
last. Mr. Deaton had lived In that
neighborhood for a life time, ?hd for
a long time had roomed at his own
home, but took his meals with his
nephew, Burt Deat?n, about a mlle
and a quarter distant from his home.
He left there Sunday, December 20th,
after supper carrying a light, on his
way to his room. Not returning Mon
day for breakfast or dinner, lt was
feared something had .happened, and
a search was begun for him, but no
trace was found. Tuesday about 20
joined in'the search, and his body
was discovered about ll o'clock, ly
ing on a steep hillside. He had been
dead some time. An Inquest was
held Wednesday at 11 o'clock, and it
was ascertained that he came to his
death from natural causes. The re
mains were burled Wednesday even
ing at the Deaton burying ground.
The deceased was a brother of Capt.
Wm. Deaton, who died a year or more
ago. He was a good citizen and up
right man, and will be greatly missed
from his community.

Tennessee Desperado Killed.
Chattanooga, Tenn., Jan. 4.-Gar
rett Heddon, a desperado, who six
years ago murdered his brother in
Polk county, Tenn., -was to-day shot
and killed by Sher'ff Biggs, of Polk
county. Hedden's eighteen-year-old
son was shot and killed by deputy
sheriffs a few hours later.
Since Heddon murdered his bro
ther he has been at liberty. Officers
hesitated to luyade the mountain
fastnesses until Hedden recently be
came so defiant that he made fre
quent trips to Benton and openly de
fied arrest. It ls said that friends
are organizing to avengo the death
of Hedden and that they may attack
Benton, with the object of killing
Sherill niggs.

Opened Session This Morning in tho
Wallinna Baptist Church.
The first session of the Oconee
County Interdenominational Sunday
School Convention opened this morn
ing In the Walhalla Baptist church.
There are about seventy-five dole
gates In attendance, and the sessions
ot to-day and to-morrow give prom
ise of great Interest to all Sunday
school workers.
State Secretary Way, of Pelser;
State President P. W. Gregg, of Ab
beville; County President J. J. Har
rell, of Westminster, and County Sec
retary J. H. Burgess, of Seneca, are
in attendance, besides'others promi
nent in Sunday school work.
This afternoon's session will con
vene at 2.30 o'clock, the evening ses
sion at 7.30. There are interesting
and instructive programs prepared
for each session.
To-morrow's (Thursday) morning
session opens at 9.30 o'clock, and at
ll o'clock Rev. C. S Blackburn, of
Seneca, will handle "The Round Ta
ble," this closing the morning session.
At 2.30 o'clock the election of offi
cers will be held, the session continu
ing to 3.30, when tho subject of
"Temperance" will be handled by
Clerk of Court C. R. D. Burns.
I T Thursday night the dosing session
will open at 7.30, continuing until 9
o'clock.
Let all our citizens, especially
those interested ld church and Sun
day school work, attend these ses
sions. The large number of delegates
present should have the encourage
ment of the presence of our own peo
ple. The delegates are being most
heartily welcomed to Walhalla.

known here years ago, but have re
sided at Adamsvllle, Ala., for quite a
while, were in Walhalla last week.
They are remembered by many of the
older white citizens of this commu
nity ns types of the old-time colored
people, and hold the respect of all.
Before their return to their home in
Alabama they made lt a point to see
a number of the elderly people, for
whom, years ago, they had worked.

TRIAL OP HARRY THAW.
Great Crowds Thronged Around the
Court House in Effort to See.
New York, Jan. 6.-The second
trial of Harry Thaw for the murder
of Stanford White, bogan to-day with
a platoon of 100 police holding in
check the huge crowd that sought to
witness the beginning of the pro
ceedings. The place of Delmas ls
occupier' iy Martin Littleton. Dan
iel O'Reilly, Thaw's adviser, ls at
his old piuco and so ls Russell Pea
body. Thaw's young wife is at her
accustomed place at his side, but his
mother is absent, being ill, and the
Countess of Yarmouth is in England
with her own domestic sorrow, and
attendance is impossible. Only the
reporters and talesmen were admit
ted to the court room. Judge Dow
ling is presiding in place of Judge
Fitzgerald. Thaw looks more nattily
dressed, cheerful, brighter and more
self-contained than before.
The first venire of 100 men was
dismissed because the names were
published Friday by mistake.
Attorney Peabody makes the state
ment that insanity will be Thaw's
defense. Attorney Jerome, who be
lieves Tho.w insane at the first trial
will combat the theory.

Returns will be taken at all places,
where the hour is not specified, from
10 o'clock in the morning until 3
o'clock in the afternoon. Please bear
this in mind.
Every male citizen r tween the
ages of 21 and 60 years, except ex
Confederate soldiers and those in
capable of earning a support from
being maimed or from other causes,
shall be deemed taxable polls.
Note all transfers of real estate
since making your last return; from
whom acquired or to whom sold. All
tax payers are required to give the
number of their school district. They
are also requested to state whether
the property ls situated In town or
country. It is absolutely necessary
to make all returns before the 20th
of February. After that date fifty
per cent penalty for non-returns is
prescribed by law.

There will he nn examination for
teachers held at the Walhalla Court
House on FRIDAY, JANUARY 17th,
1908. The examination will begin
promptly at 9 a. m., and bc closed as
soon after 5 p. m. as ria nature of
the work will allow. The State Su
perintendent of Education requests
that the law about certificates be
strictly enforced. I notice that there
are several new teachers in the coun
ty who have not sent their certificates
to be recorded. If the trustees will
call their attention to this matter lt
will enable me to carry out the '* v
on this subject. I further notice that
there are a few that have been avoid
ing the examinations, even after their
certificates have xpired. Please look
over your certificates and see whe
ther lt is over two years old or not.
If you find that lt is you should at
tend this examination. The County
Board will not issue a certifies t? to
any one who will not be governed
by the rules of the examination as
conducted by them. No teacher will
be allowed to sit by anothor or speak
without permission of the board. ,
