MAC??INES INSTEAD OF MEN.
Strike May Promote Largely the Use
of Mechanical Operators.
New York, August 16.-The strik
ing telegraph operators may be en
acting one of the tragedies which the
introduction of labor-saving machin
ery has brought about. The Postal
bas a machine which takes the place
of eight operators and needs but a
single wire for Its operation. The
Western Union has a dozen machines
In use. each of which does the work
of four operators.
It ls admitted that the strike will
be the means of forcing the compa
nies to install additional machines.
Within a comparatively short ?line j t
all of the main offices will thus be tl
equipped, and the old-time operator
will be largely confined to the smaller
offices, where there Is not enough
business to warrant the great expense
of buying and operating the ma
chines.
All that ls necessary to operate one
of these machines is knowledge of
how to operate a typewriter. A girl
may write a dispatch at one end of
the circuit on a typewriting machine,
and a typewriter at the other end of
the wire automatically records lt.
Nothing is necessary at the receiving
end except to feed a sheet of paper
into the machine.
Four messages may he sent at the
same time from either end of the wiro
In the case of the octuple machine,
or two messages may he flying across
the wire in each direction simulta
neously.
