C., August 17.-Spe cial: The Townvlllo Presbyterian young ladles gave a delightsome Ice cream entertainment last evening, 16th Instant, in the home and front lawn of Misses Sallie and Mattie Mc Carthy. A large crowd of young peo ple, with some old ones, was present, and every ono seemed to bu happy. A small charge wus made for each BAVCOF of cream, and o.uite a nice sum was realized, which will be used to purchase new lamps for the church, and other necessary things. After the cream was served the young people spent an hour or two most pleasantly In slmpleamusenients and social conversation. The order of the entire ocasi?n was beautiful nnd the spirit that prevailed was lovely in the highest degree. A few weeks ago some of these same young ladles raised. In a b.ief space of time, and with very little effort, the snug sum of fifty dollars mostly from members and former members of the church, and bought n new organ for the church's UBO. The guests were re ceived in the hall, then ushered into the parlor. After all the guests had arrived, they were invited out to the veranda, which was very pretty with ?tn Japanese lanterns and coiy corners. The guests were entertained by de lightful graphophone music and also numerous games. Among these was a geographical contest, in which all were ?..nj much interested. In this game | the young men had to choose pnrtnors for themselves, and the couple guess ing tho most questions was awarded ? the prize. This, w! ich was a dainty little stick pin, was won by J. B. Hill, ' and he very gracefully .-resented it tu hin partner, Miss Carrie Frazier. Tho guests were then invited into the dining room, which was beauti-] ful with its snowy white curtains and cloths and decorations of pretty plants. The table was the center of attraction. In the center was the pretty whito birthday cake, and around this deli cious fruit looked very tempting. On each end of tho table was a large, clear glass vase, Ulled with choice Howe and suspended over each end were I larg?, bunches of evergreen, to which J were tied blue ribbons, holding a card with the name of each guest. Each took home with him ns a souvenir of I this happy occasion one of these dain tily arranged cards. j. . Delicious cakes, ice cream, melons and candy were served in bounteous abundance, and after all lind been served they returned to the parlor and entered into more games, after which each bade the pretty hostess good night and wished her many happy re turns of the day. Whetstone, August 19.-Special: Whetstone was visited on Saturday and Sunday hy a very heavy rain and wind storm. Mr. McConnell has been spending the past week at Mrs. M. E. Conley's. Lee Rochester and sister, Miss An nie, of Westminster, are visiting rel atives here. Col. J. S. Newman, of Walhalla, spent Monday uiftht at Mrs. M. E. Conley's on his '.vay to his mountatn homo. Ho was accompanied hy his grandson. Mr. and Mrs. V. M. Burrell, of Clayton, Ga., are visiting their rela tives here. Bert Rohins and Miss cassie Con ley attended Miss Ethel Angel's birth day party at Walhalla last Friday night. Monroe Whittier was very fortu nate last Saturday hy catching four large coons, which, If let alone, do great damage to crops. Miss Gussie DuPre will attend a birthday party at Walhalla next Mon day night. Miss Ethel Jacobs has returned homo after an extended visit with relatives.
