A VOICE FROM uLD PICKENS.
Crops in Good Condition- How Wolf Stake
Got Its Name-Other Matters.
Old Picketts, July 17.-After an
intensely wann and very dry June,
July came in accompanied l>y roacb
vain, which ransell thu Rtreaina to
e?woll ami resulted in considerable
Ramage to crops on Koowee and Lit
tle rivers, especially tho latter. Not- j
withstanding this the farmers are in
good spirits, liavo the grass pretty
well under control and are happy in
contemplation of ten cent cotton in
the fall, lt does bogiu to look as if,
the farmers, under the management
of the Farmers' Protective Associa
tion, aided by the unerring dispensa- i
tiona of a W?HC Providence, are be-'
coming more prosperous, and the time
is not distant when the sons of toil,
by the sweat of whoso brow tho crops
are produced, will reap the benefit of
their labor instead of the gambler in
futures and the speculator. There
has been great improvement in the
.crops ?luring tho past two weeks.
Corn is growing uicely and is mostly
""laid by." Cotton has a good weed
ind is putting on fruit rapidly.
On last Sunday at ll o'clock a. m.
Kev. VV. F. Strickland, of Seneca,
preached a moot edifying sermon at
Old Picketts church from Matthew
28:26 : "And lo, I am with you always,
.even unto the end of the world."
Although m disponed from recent
sickness, he portrayed in language
pure and beautiful the undying love
of our Saviour, his tender compas
sion for tho sinner, His willingness to
save and constant presonce with us
from the oradlo to the grave, in the
helpless innocence of chidhood, tho
joys and sorrows, trials and tempta
tions of maturer life, the weakness
ind infirmities ol' old age, His sus
Mining, comforting presence with the
Christian in his passage "through the
valley of the shadow of death" on
that mysterious "journey from whose
?bourne no traveler returns."
There was a large congregation
?present, most of whom remained till
.he afternoon and were delightfully
.entertained by charming music, and
singing rendered by Messrs. Burns,
Smith, Gaillard, Ri rod, Wood and
others.
Prominent among the singers was
our efficient Clerk of Court, C. K. I).
Burns, who is as much at home in a
singing convention as on thc st ump,
at a picnic, in legislative halls or in
thc clerk's otlico. He bas been styled
the "Adonis of thc Court House,"
.tod who ever thus named him might
have added that he ia thc silver
tongued Orpheus of Coonee, and
whilst his muslo may not "stop the
streams in their course, move the
?trees and rocks and tame tho savage
Ibeasl," ho is certainly wonderfully
.gifted and expert in many things
(besides singing.
We also noted the presence of our
??.sheriff, the gallant W. W. Moss,
svho still "maintains his youth ami
beauty." Mr. Moss has served his
OOunty well, both in peace and war,
and his many friends herc rejoice to
see him HO cheerful and active.
And there was the affable, portly
and ponderous Auditor, J. P. Kecse,
who looked after dinner as if lie
?might have dined where Burns did
and met with the same fate (that of
the frog fed on buckshot).
Our young and handsome trea
surer, Air. Schroder, was also on
hand. Come again, gentlemen. The
friendly hand-shake, as well as the
music, hath "charms" for thc voter.
In speaking of tho place in our
coonnty called the "Wolf Stake" the
. other day W. W. Moss told me how
it came by the name. In the early
settlement of this country it was in
fested by wolves, bear and other
predatory animals and various means
were resorted to for the destruction
if the same. Seine ingenious hunter
planted a stake firmly in the ground,
the same being split from the top
iud opened in the shape of a V, the
bait, a piece of meat, being suspended
"rom the top. The hungry wolf, in
ns efforts to got the dainty morsel,
would become fastened in tho fork
>t th? stake. This was a favorite
>';a ? for entrapping the wolf by this
lev ice. Hence tho name of "Wolf
'Stake."
Hov. Farmer, pastor of the Baptist
ibu rc h at Old I'iekeirs, will begin a
av "traotod meeting there next Sab
I ?ath.
Tl e Presbyterians will begin a
trotraotcd meeting at the above
mureil on tho third Sunday In

NOTES ON THE OCEAN WAVE.
Rev. J. R. Moore Writes Interestingly of His
Ocean Voyage.
On Hoard tho Celtic, Amii! Ocean,
July 7.- How can one- apare time
amid the charma of the placid ocean,
the approaching sunset (which we
desire to behold) and congenial com
panions on every hand, from whom
we shall bo separated after little
more than another day ? In tho
midst of such pleasures it is not only
hard to spare thu time, hut also hard
to think of what to write.
So many of my friends urged rae
Iud*..re leaving home to write to Tho
Courier that they might all learn of
the proceedings of this great pil
grimage acrotas the sen.
There are on hoard this steamer
(Celtio) alone? which ?ailed from
New York on June '10, about one
hundred Baptist preachers, besides
many Baptist men and womon, who
are going to London to attend the
Baptist World's Congross. This is
the first gathering of this kind ever
held and gives promise of being a
great meeting.
Other delegations sailed from New
York, July 1st, Philadelphia and
other points thu same day, and some
earlv in the week.
We started under auspicious cir
cumstances. The weather had been
delightfully cool for two days, giving
us such fine time for railroad travel.
Personally, I had the whole trip
alone from Westminster to New
York. Stopping a short while to
visit brothers and a sister at Greens
boro, N. C., I left thore Tuesday
afternoon and reached Washington
that night at 9.30, where I had my
first view of our nation's capitol. I
need not say this city is full of inter
est. Had only one day in New
York ; but it is great. We havo
now been on the Atlantic one week
on one of thc greatest and finest
steamers in the world. It is 700
feet long, 75 feet wide and 49 feet
deep, 21,000 tons displacement.
This magnificent ship could weather
a considerable squall and affect tho
passengers seriously, but we have
had a calm sea the entire time. The
captain savs in his fifteen years of
crossing the sea he has never seen
such tranquil waters through tho
entire trip. Others who have crossed
many times say they have never
seen anything to equal this. Thoao
who have been entertaining feelings
of sympathy for the sea-sick ones on
this trio have wasted their sympa
thies. Not one on the Celtic has
shown thc first sign of Hoa-sickness.
On such a sea as we have had no
one could be sea-sick on the Celtic.
We are to be at Queenstown to
morrow morning about 8 o'clock.
Our ship, going a southern course,
leaving tho direct route, to avoid
icnbergH, will not reach Liverpool
till Sunday morning about 8 o'clock.
Most of us will, therefore, attend
worship in Liverpool and leave on
the Congress Special for London
Monday. This Congress will last
from July 11th to 18th. Then many
of UH will take extended trips through
France, Switzerland, Germany, Hol
land, Belgium, and some will extend
their trip into Italy. Some will only
run over England, Scotland, Ireland
and Walen. Some will go to Paria.
The groat party that has engaged
Hindi fine fellowship and so much of
family life for the eight daya will not
be together again. We have formed
friendships hero we are loath to
break with, but the friendship may
endure though we must bo separated.
The Fourth of July was duly ob
served with speeches, parades, etc.,
which was too American for this
English ship crow.
Some amusing incidents occurred
which I should like to relate, but
can't Hparo my time now nor ank for
more of your space. Suffice it to say
the fish have been greatly disap
pointed l?v thin cargo of human
freight. Yet we are a day and night
from Kugland arni we can't tell what
a day may bring forth. The school
of porpoise jumping and leaping to
ward UH an hour ago seemed to think
they must be fed, but we are a Hellish
set.
Games aro being played, and land
conversation is on every hand. The
elegant library and reading room has
boon turned into a general reception,
game and (ion vers?t ion hall, HO pardon
the lack of connection and tell thc
folks we are all well and happy.

Kills City Ticket Agent With Shotgun.
George Wright, city ticket agent
for the Southern Railway at Rome,
Ga., was shot and instantly killed on
the morning of July 10 by Vincent
T. Sanford, former tax collector of
Floyd county, who used a double
barreled shotgun loaded with buck
shot.
Both barrels were discharged into
Wright's breast. The shooting
occurred on one of the principal
residence streets.
Immediately after the tragedy
Sanford surrendered to an officer, to
whom he said :
"He has ruined my home and I
have killed him. 1 would do the

It is learned that Sanford and
Wright had an altercation a few
