Reports of various kinds are circulat ing through the daily pre??, and tho rail road oficial? aro kept busy denying Home and partially eonlirming othoru. The roport a? to the proposed extension through Kabun Gap in the latest to be denied by President Spencer, of tho .Southern Kail way. This report carno .outlast Thursday in the Knoxville Sen tinal, and tho information was accredited directly to President Spencer. It stated that the railroad would bo built through RabUU (?ap to Walhalla and connect hero With tho Hine Ridge Railway asan outlet for the products of the coal fields and timber regions. This proposed short-cut trunk line has been looked forward to with hope for years, and each year has brought forth a heavy crop of roporta, roviving hope for the realization of Cal? .'loon's dream of a great trunk lino through the mountains, connecting tho wes? and northwest directly with tho South Atlantic coast. So far there has boen nothing defluitO) however, ami tho present abundant supply of report? anti conjectures bids fair to go the way of all thu others. In speaking of the reported extension through Kainui Gap, President Spencer says: The Johnson City Southern Railway is ntonded to shorten tho line from John son City, Tonn., to Marion, N. C. Tho . Mu? any which will build the line has inst beOU incorporated. Thesecond line is to make a connection between Mary ville, Tenn., ami Bushnell, N. C. This route will not penetrate Kabun Gap as iveportod. lt will pass through another *ap in the mountains. And thus tiie situation stands as it has stood for years, and may stand for years to come. The reports aro circulated in one ?plaiter and denied in another; promises made hen; .?nd ridiculed else whoro, and the situation romains uu? ohanged-"nothing doiug." The Southern may he in earnest about building; we hope it is. lt. may he at tho same old game of reviving reports ind tining a little work here and there to hold its rights ot way. There may hu something and there may ho nothing in lill these reports. No one eau toll. However this may be, we hope the time .viii soon come when the h.g dog that Us o.-enpied the manger for so long will . -it her come out or be kicked out. This 'dog-in-tho-matigor policy does not bene ,it tho Southern, mu would the building .of tho road cripple it. There is au abundance of traffic in the proposed ifield to support a U0W road The simple truth of the matter is, the Southern tloes m>t want to build, nor does it want another company to do so; it simply Stands in the way of others, and will Stop in and build when compelled to do so in solf-defouse-not before. Petersburg, .lune 2(1.-Tho hu nounoomont of AloxiofPs retiromout was not aooompamed by tho usual rescript of praise and it boars all tho ear-marks of imperial disfavor. Tho retirement of the Grand Duke Alexis as high admiral and of Aloxieff as Viceroy of tho Par East and tho suppression of fear of tho Eastern committee in quiok succession is the best evidence that .Japan could need that tho Emperor has washed his hands of the whole ManollUrian adventure. Tho liberal press greets tho demise of the Far Kastorn committoe with a howl of exul tation as hoing tho final blow to tho polioy which led to tho present war. Tho Slovo, M. Wittc's organ, traces tho origin of the war to tho late Interior Minister Von Plehve, and continues: "The black page which preceded tho blondy pages of tho hook ol' our Far Kastern altair has at last been torn out by the Emperor and all Russia will rejoice." A story is current that tho day before Grand Duke Alexis resigned as high ad miral ho recoivod a formal warning from tho Terrorists informing him that unless bo rotirod within twenty-four hours, sen I tonoo on bim would ho passed and exe outed. Cuban Diarrhoea. U. S. soldiers who served in Cuba dur ing tho Spanish war know what this dis ease is, and that ordinary rem?dies have little moro effect than so much wa ter, ('uhan diarrhoea is almost as se vero and dangerous as a mild attack of choiera. There is ono remedy, how ever, that can alwavs bo depended upon as will ho soon hy tho following certifi cate from Mrs. Minnie Jacobs, of Hous ton, Texas: "I hereby certify that Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diar rhoea Remedy cured my husband of a severe attack of Cuban diarrhoea, which he brought, homo from ("nba. Grainger, a local Baptist proachor and farmer, was shot from ambush and killed to-day whilo working in his field. Thc only causo that can ho assigned is that Grainger had brought into tho .'Dead Stretch," a section so-called be tween Bayboro and Loris, two negroes to work on his place and allowed them to sloop at his bouse.
