\ Growth ot ProWWKow. [Baptist Courier, June 1.1 The agitation that has boen going on for a number of years in favor of prohibition is bearing fruit. The sentiment in favor of temperance is stronger than ever before. The ! teaching in thc ohuroheB, schools and homes is producing happy results. The friends of this oause need not be discouraged. Complete and perfect victory may not oome to any State aa a whole, but the salo and uso of intoxicating liquors will be greatly lessened in many places. The traffic in liquors, legal and illicit, is under the ban. The use of liquor on the part of employees is discouraged and in many oases prohibited by large corporations, business conoerns and .employers. Every man, young and old, making application in due form for government position must answer the question, "Do you use intoxicat ing drinks?" No doubt many an applicant has been turned down upon answering that question in the affir mative. The drinking school toacher isa thing of the past; parents de mand sober teachers. It is a rare uight to soo a drinking physician ; the people wish a sober man to stand by the bedside of their beloved sick. In all the professions and occupations the world is looking for sober men. This is right. How important, then, for parents, teachers and preachers who have to do with training tho young to impress upon them the su premo importance and necessity of living sober lives. Tho growth of the temperance and prohibition sen timent is to oe hailed with delight by all right th.oking people We are pleased to find the follow ing encouraging words and facts in our worthy contemporary, tho South ern Christian Advocate, a paper that uses its great influence in favor of righteousness : "?Few people who do not keep in actual touoh with tho question of prohibition have any conception of tho sure and steady growth of the piohibition sentiment in the United States. Figures may often prove ?misleading, but tho following facts from a recent authoritative report are both encouraging and convincing. The report reviews by statistics the status of prohibition in thirty-nine States of tho Union, and shows it? relative strength. Three of these Kansas, Maine and North Dakota are prohibition States. In Tonnes see prohibition prevail? in all save eight cilios of over 5,000 ; in Iowa in all save twenty-five cities; in Vir ginia and Nerti) Carolina local op tion laws were passed in 1903, and in the former Richmond is the only important city without prohibition. In twelve other States, all Southern with the exception of Pennsylvania, und of 062 counties, 503, or more than half, have prohibition, lil have partial prohibition, ll have dispen saries, and only 337 allow the salo of .intoxicating drinks under license. In nineteen States, with tho exception of Mississippi, all Northern and Western, 4,411 towns and cities are wholly prohibitive. While no report is obtainable from tho country dis tricts, it is a natural inference that with the prohibition sentiment so strong in the towns and cities, this sentiment must be oven stronger in the country." The term "Dyspepsia" moans a lack of pepsin in the stomach. Indigestion is rightly used when evor tho food is uot properly digested, regardless to tho cause. It is immaterial whothor you call your ailment dyspepsia or indigestion when Uydalo's Stomach Tablets aro used. They aro guarantee.1 to euro all forms of stomach trouble Hey a trial box, (price 25 cents) and be convinced. Walhalla Drug Company. Suggestions as to Drunkards. Dr. I. A. McSwain, in a paper on alcoholic insanity, read before the Tennessee Medical Association, of fered the following suggestions : 1. The children of drunken and .debauched parents ought for obvious reasons to oe taken away from them .and placed in decent homes, or re 'moved to industrial institutions pro vided by the State. This would ?..heck their hereditary tendencies to drunkenness, and therefore reduce tho number being raised up to be come a burden to thc State in the way of paupers, criminals, lunatics. '2. Young people who in early life contract thc pernicious habit of drinking should also be removed 'from the temptation of their environ 'nents, and placed in institutions in which they should bo taught some useful employment and restrained f Tom vicious habits. 3. The drinking maa, as soon as be began his spree, before ho was tyrttsc? by it, should bo taken into custody, not as a nuisance, but as a clangorous man or one likely to be come so, because of insanity in tho incipient stage. 4. The confirmed drunkard, the chronic alcoholic subject, should on too account be allowed to exercise fais personal liberty in the punmit of .delusions wbioh result from pro longed excesses. Dyspepsia or Indigestion. Post Office Suggestions. | The following suggestions have been mailed to us by a subscriber residing at Victoria, N. C.: 1. After your mail has been banded out to you, please inquire if "that's all." It sounds BO insinuating and pleases the postmaster. 2. When you fail to get mail that you were expecting you should re mark, "Well, that's strange. It was mailed to this post office." Give him to understand that you know that the post office system is so per foot that no mistakes are ever raado any where iii the whole business ex cept in this office. Then be will be likely to produoe the mail in ques tion at once. 3. When you have mail that re quires stamps on it, just pass it io and tell the postmaster to "stick 'em on," as the Hoking of two or three Htaraps might make you sick, but the Hoking of fifty or more stamps a day would not hurt a postmaster. No matter if it did. 4. When you mail a letter you should tell the postmaster when and whioh way to send it off, as the old sap head would not be likely to know unless you told him. ?. When the postmaster finds a letter with the two "mystic" words "In haste," written od the envelope, he gets a hustle on himself, and mails that letter at once. The mail car riers whip their horses into a gallop ; the postal olerks on the rotite fall over one another in their hurry to push that letter along ahead of all the others, and the engineer of the mail train will pull the throttle wide open and rush that train along ninety miles au hour. 6. When you have something that you wish to get registered, or want a money order you might como in early in the morning to have it attended to during the hurry of getting off the mails or during the rush of receiving and delivering the evening mails, or, better still, about 9 o'clock in tho evening after the books are closed. It will give you so much pleasure to have to wait, at the hours above mentioned, four or five times Ioniser than if you had called at any other time of the day, besides, it is during such hurried times that mistakes are most likely to OCOUT, 7. It is so very pleasing, too, to those who are impatiently waiting to get their mail, to see you standing at the delivery window deliberately looking over your mail, buying stamps and passing in a big bill to got changed, all of which, with proper regard for the rights of others, should have been attended to at a more seasonable time. Now is the Time to Subscribe. It is never safe to borrow the newspaper to which your neighbor subscribes and for which he pays. Head the following account, given by tho Kansas City Journal, of what happened to a mau in that part of the country who kept u;? with the progress of events at the expense of the man who took the paper : "A man who was too economical to subscribe for his home paper sent his little boy to borrow the copy taken by his neighbor. In his haste tho boy ran over a |4 stand of bees and in ten minutes looked like a warty summer squash. His cries reached his father, who ran to his assistance, and, failing to notice a barbed-wire fenee, ran into it, break ing it down, cutting a handful of flesh from his anatomy and ruining a *5 pair of pants. Tho old cow took advantage of the gap in the fence and got into tho corn-field and killed herself eating green corn. Hearing the racket, the wife ran, Upset a four gallon chun of rich cream into a basket of kitten?, drowning the whole Hock. In her hurry she dropped a $'?5 se*, of false teeth. Tho baby, left alone, crawled through the spilled cream and into the parlor, ruining a *'20 carpet. During tho excitement the oldest d nighter ran away with the hired man, the dog broke up cloven setting hens, and the calves got out and chewed the tails off four fino shirts." It might have been worse. Nothing Risked, Nothing Gained. You risk nothing in buying Elliott's Emulsified Oil Liniment, because you get your money baok if not satisfied. There never wore a better people than the people of South Carolina. They have had bitter enemies and tiley have been occasionally much maligned, but when it comes to tho highest grace of all the grace of loving kindness, they cannot be beaten this side of heaven. Pardon my partiality for I really think so. Now all this sweet talk has a pur pose-it is a prelude to a suggestion to the people of this generous State to set their generous hearts to a task before the summer vacation be gins. And it is about to begin just now. Have you thought of your little orphan brothers and sisters ? There are two hundred of them in the Presbyterian Orphanage at Clinton (Thornwell), there are two hundred' more in the Baptist Orphanage at Greenwood (Connie Maxwell), and there aro nearly that many at the Methodist Orphanage at Columbia (Epworth). I know something of the condition of these denominational homes, for I have a standing welcome at all of them, and who ought to know them better than I ? I know that at this soason of tho year they aroj always sorely pressed for the necessities of life, and this little love lotter ?| to my brethren of the different denomina tions is to suggest that oach one of you send at once your check or a barrel of flour, or rice, or molasses or even a sack of grits to the orphan age you love best. Juno and July are the best times to send. Every body with a heart ought to feel it a privilege to do it. At any of these homes a nickle will give a child a good meal and five dollars will board a child for a month. There are six hundred of these children in your church orphanages. And that does not count thc Episcopal and Catho lic homes in Chai teston or the Charleston Orphan House, supported by the city, or the Colored Industrial Orphanages in Charleston a id Co lumbia run by those two good colored men, Jenkins and Carroll, who de serve tho help and sympathy of the white people of this State. And I do hope they will not be forgotten. Now, sit down quickly, dear friend, beforo you take your own va cation, and before you forgot it, and do something for the institution that you lovo boat. This is the soason when nearly everybody is fixing for a good timo. Your dear little brothers and sisters at the orphan ages ought to have a good time, too. Your friend and follow citizen, W. P.
