At least at one mo.il throughout
the whole winter frosh or oanned
fruit or vegetables should bo eaten.
Eat plentifully of onions, celery and
lettuce. In tho oity these last throe
can be had in tho markets nearly tho
whoie year round, but in the country
perhaps tho celery and lettuce oariuot
bo obtained during tho winter
months. But onions oan always bo
had, and there aro canned tomatoes,
of which nearly ovory housewife has
a supply, and theso should ho oaten
just as thoy aro taken from tho cnn,
with Bait and popper, and perhaps a
little, vinegar added. Cranberry
sauce is a splendid dish to go along
with tho winier dinner, and apples,
either raw, baked or made into sauce,
will keep tho system froo from many
impurities.
Tho large amount of nitrogenous
and carbonaceous food oaten makes
it nooosBary that tho system should
bo supplied with just tho aoids, vogo
tablo juices and carthy salts that
theso fruits and vegetables contain.
They are antiscorbutic in thoir effect,
and tend to keep tho system olonnsod
from all impurities. Winter pimples,
oczema, smallpox, scurvy and rheu
matism prevail in tho winter simply
because so little fruit and vcgotables
aro oaten. There is no reason why
theso diseases should bo any moro
prevalent in winter. It is largely a
mattor of diot.
Don't sottlo down to a ration of
pork and corn-broad, baked beans
and fried potatoes. Eat meat if you
must, and eat corn-broad and beans
and potatoes, also. Thoy aro good
foods-good enough for anybody if
properly cooked, but with your moat
and beans and potatoes oat fruits and
vegetables. Mix an onion with your
potato, oat tomatoes with your beans,
and apple sauce with your moat. Bal

Boll Weevil Can't be Eradicated.
Shreveport, In., December 14.
To-day's proceedings of tho boll wee
vil convention were marked by ad
drosses and papers treating of tho
boll weevil. A number of govern
ment experts were listed to speak.
Theso exports declare tho weevil a
groat evil and ineradicable. They
toll of tho destruction wrought by
the pest and next assort that cottou
can bo produced in spite of it. One
of tLo speakers, not on the program,
got tho floor by special permission of
tho convention and argued in favor
of his contention that by using Paris
green tho weevil can be exterminated.
Tho trend of opinion is that the
'cevil will survive until its mission
shall havo been accomplished. All
that cnn bo dono is to fortify against
it, or light it. An clement in the
convention favor something in the
nature of martini law over tho in
fested districts requiring the land to
bo turned out and thus cut off thc
post of food supply.
Tho convention program wns out
short a day by the non-appearauco of
gentlomen who had agreed to speak.
Notwithstanding tho fact that no
pinn for the destruction of thc wee
vil! has been proposed, tho conven
tion hOB proved n body of good
listonors.
A feature of tho government ex
perts' remedy is diversification of
orops. As quite all of those gentle
men aro from tho North and West,
thoy seo tho plan as something wholly
now in this section of tho country.
That was tho methqd which prevailed
throughout tho South up to 18G5.
Then cotton was made a surplus
money crop and the plan mado tho
South a country of wealthy planters
and farmers.
By far tho most important notion
taken by tho convention was that
with roforenco to holding cotton for
10 cents, tho true prioo. Tho mem
bers expressed themselves this morn
ing ns moro than delighted with tho
unanimous action Inst night.

of tho finding of tho bonds, which
wore thought to bo of no value, reads
like a little Christmas story and is
rather pccculiar to say tho lcast.^Mrs.

tho two bonds among a lot of old
papers, and did not bother with them
for some timo. Finally, in going
over all of them sho looked over tho

PROFIT
The matter of feed is of
tremendous importance to the
farmer. Wrong feeding is
loss. Right feeding is profit.
The up-to-date farmer knows
what to feed his cows to get
the most milk, his pigs to get
the most pork, his hens to
get the most eggs. Science.
But how about the children ?
Are they fed according to
science, a bone food if bones
are soft and undeveloped, a
flesh and muscle food if they
are thin and weak and a blood
food if there is anemia ?
Scott's Emulsi?n is a mixed
food; the Cod Liver Oil in it
makes flesh, blood and muscle,
the Lime and Soda make bone
and brain. It is thc standard
