RAISING BEEF CATTLE.
An Avenue ol Profit Opon to tho Farmer? ol
South Carolina.
When ono look? ovor thc waste
places of this State and considers
that thousands of cattle and sheep
might he raised where now there is
not a sheep on a thousand hills, nor a
dozen lo rds of beef cattle in tho
State, In- sees tito necessity for a re
vival. The beef trust is fastened on
the people. The price of cut meat
is lixed by the trust, which is en?
e, uraged by our national legislation.
There is no sign of a reduction iii
the pri?e. Our people should be ox
r. hortcd to raise beef cattle on a
largo scale. On the rivers atid
abandoned lands of tho State there
is ample room for thousands of cat
tle.
liaising beef or fat cattle is
specialty. Tho dairy business, thor
oughbred hogs, sheep and horses can
not go along with it. The fact is the
farmer, who is trying a half dozen ot
more specialties at the same time will
generally fail. Ile should have a bit
bank account, and then ho may get
nome fun out of the business. Let
him take that one thing for willoh ht
?ind his land are best suited and sti k
to it through thick ami thin. If cot
ton is his crop, let him plant cotter
with only enough small grain, corn
and truck to supply the farm, ll" in
the dairy business, let him raise dairy
cattle and subordinate all his effort*
toward getting the best dairy poSsi
ble. If ho goes into the fat catth
business, lid every crop planted am
every house built be to the intOl'CS
of betd" cattle. That is tho only wa]
to succeed in South Carolina. Tw<
years ago a carload of young short
horns and grades were sold in Spar
t anhing. They were bought bj
farmers. I'p to III?H date no spcoin
improvement has been reported ii

In all hi? corn land he plants or BOWK
peas, or will hereafter, and this will
give hi? cattle several weeks lino
feed after the corn is gathered. The
roots anti vines will improve tho, land.
Winter pasture is receiving his at
tention, for it is necessary to have

dover. Ile will shelter his cattle in
the winter and herd them in lots dur*
lng the summer, lie expects to cut
down his feitili/er hills and soon do
away with purchasing any. Cotton
will he an incidental crop and as the
manure increases the land will im
prove rapidly. Thus Mr. Walker has
hut one idea and that is to raiso the
liUQSt beef cattle, if he hastohuyhis
milk and butler from his neighbors.
The next consideration is the gradual
improvement of his land. Ile pro
poses to attempt nothing that will be
in the way of his one object. It may
be two or three years before ho baa
many for market, for he is now work
ing to increase his 'nerd uji to the
maximum number for a poor season.
There is no reason why ho should
not succeed. Ile has the land and
tho cattle to start with, ile can use
the ordinary labor of the country.
There is a constant demand for beef.
Should his herd increase so that he
would havo to expand somewhat,
there aro thousands of acres ?d' cheap
land near bim. We shall watch the
results of his work with much inter
est, for cattle, pea vine hay and
sorghum with small grain will greatly
enrich our State.-Capt. Charles
Petty, in Spurttinhurg Journal.
