fiOVEKNOR HEYWAHO CANED AT SUMTER.
Tho city of Sumter wa? tho ccntor of
attraction to ibo people of South Caro
Lina last week. It was tho occasion for
tho gathering of thousands of repre
sentativo citizens from all parts of tho
State, and Sumter did the handsome
thing in their entertainment. Wednes
day and Thursday wore tho groat days
of tho carnival week. A novel feature
was tho automobile racing which was ?hi
tro?lneed for tho first timo in South Caro
lina. On Thursday afternoon was tho
foot hall game between the toa ins of
"tV ash i ngt on and Leo University ami tho
South Carolina College. Tho latter won
by a score of '21 to 0. both sides played
well, hut the South C'liolina team had it
pretty nundi their own Wily, lt was wit
tossed by thousands of interested spec
bit ors. At its conclusion wore prize
.drills in which several companies look
part. Tho (list prize was won hythe
oom putty from Georgetown and tho
second from Itichland.
Thursday evening a banquet was given
in honor of tho foot, ball foams at tho
Hotel Suinter. A notable feature of tho
evening was tho feast of reason and llow
of soul. A happy incident was the pre
sentation to Governor lleywartl bf a cano

tho Charleston Nows ami Courier well
says :
Mayor (i ugo W. Dick's little spooeb,
presenting the cane to the Governor, was
au uncommonly happy effort, oven for

the youngest speakers alluded to as tho

town to have a mayor wdio is a credit to
I in publie as well as in private, and
snob is tho Game Cook Mayor. Mayors
aro selected with caro in Sumter. Tho
'.'ollowing from the Slayer's presentation
speech must have gratified thc Cbvorhor
to the fullest :
"We love you, Governor. We have all
watched your career since taking your
seat in tho Gubernatorial chair with tho
keenest interest, and in your many trials
have sympathized lu) little. We fully re
alize that lhere are matters, especially
those touching executive clemency, that
at timi's weigh heavy upon you, but
knowing your faith in our One All Wise
(Snider, and believing that your actions
in all sm h aftturs aro tho results of your
direct appeals to His tb rb tic of grace and
mercy, wo may rest assured that our
country's cause is safe in your hands.
