THE ATTACK ON THE PRESIDENT.
Tho shooting of Prosidont MoKlnloy

tho doopost sympathy of ti i Amorloan

of sympathy havo como from ovory civi

that in this hour of doop distress the

From overy pooplo nnd tonguo prayors

It is OIBO wholosomo to noto tho uui

At homo and abroad tho aot is donouncod

tho dood boon moro deeply doplorod than
boro. In tho light of this occurrence it
is high timo that tho strongest measures
bo adopted to provont tho sproad of An

of tboir teaching. 11 is treason of tho
rankest sort, aud so long as its adh?rent?

lt is now boliovod that Prosidont Mc

roliof has como ovor tho pooplo. But
for fivo days his lifo lias hung by a most
slender thread, tho scales hoing almost
equally balanced botweon lifo and death.
Tho attending physicians announce that
tho crisis has boon passed and ho is in a
fair way to rocovor. But tho. nows from
his bodsido will bo awaited by oighty

ONLY ONE DISCORDANT NOTE.

PROUDEST OA Y IN BUFFALO'S HISTORY.
Just a brlof twouty-four hours ago tho

Tonight in sombre typo, surrounded
by growsomo borders of blaok, tho samo

History of Buffalo." President McKinley,
tho idol of tho American pooplo, tho na
tion's Cbiof Exocutlvo, and tho city's
honored guest, lies prostrate, suffering
tho pangs inilictod by tho bullets of a
cowardly assassin, while his lifo hangs in
tho balauco.
Out on Dolawaro avenue, at tho homo
of John G. Milburn, prosldont of tho
Pan-American Exposition, with tearful
faco and heart torn by conflicting hopes
and foars, sits tho faithful wifo, whose
devotion is known to all thc nation.
It was a few,moments aftor 4 p. m.,
whilo Prosldont MoKinloy was holding a
public reception in tho groat Tomplo of
Music on tho l'an-American grounds, that
tho cowardly attack was made, with what
success timo alono can tell.
"ALI. RAO KU TO CLASP HIS HAND."
.standing in tho midst of crowds num

ovidonco of good will, pressed by a
motley throng of pooplo, showorcd with
expressions of love and loyalty, besieged
by multitudes all eager to clasp his hand,
amid thoso surroundings and with tho
over recurring plaudits of an admiring
army of sight-soors ringing in his oars,
tho blow of tho assassin foll, and in au
instant pleasure gavo way to pain, ad

and pandemonium followed.
To-night a surging, swaying oagor mul

principal nowspapors, scanning tho bul

or cheering in turu each succeeding an
nouncement as tho naturo of tho mes

Down at polico headquarters, sur
rounded by storu-facod inquisitors of tho
law, sits a modium-sizod mau, of com

firmly together and listons with an air
of assumed indifference to tho persistent
stream of questions, arguments, objurga
tions and admonitions with which his
captors scok to induco or compel him to
talk.
Tho daily organ recital in tho splendid
Tomplo of Music witnessed tho dastardly
attompt.
Planned with tho diabolical ingenuity
and finesse of which anarchy or Nihilism
is capablo, tho would-bo assassin carried
out tho work without a hitch, and should
his designs fail and tho President survive
only to Divino Providonco can bo attrib

OUAimKD HY DETECTIVES.
Tho President, though well guarded by
United States secret sorvico detectives,
was fully oxposed to such an attack as
occurred. Ho stood at tho odgo of tho
raised dais, upon which stands tho groat
pipo organ, at tho East side of thc mag

crowded in, to gazo upon their Executive,
porchanco to clasp his hand, and then
fight their way out In tho good-natured
mob that ovory minuto swollod and mul
tiplied at tho points of ingross and ogress
to tho building. Tho President was in a
cheerful mood and was onjoying to tho
full tho hearty ovidonces of good will
which ovorywhorc mot his gazo. Upon
his right stood John G. Milburn, of Buf
falo, president- of tho Pan-Amorican Ex
position, chatting with tho Pr?sident and
introducing to him especially poisons of
noto who approached. Upon tho Presi
dent's loft stood Mr. Cortolyou.
It was shortly aftor 4 p. m., when ono
of tho throng which surrounded tho Presi
dential party, a modium-sizo man, of or
dinary appearance and plainly dressed in
black, approached as if to groot tho
President. Both Secretary Cortolyou and
Presidont Milburn noticed that tho man's 1
hand was swathed in a bandago or hand
kerchief. Itoports of bystanders di ff or
fisto his hand. Ho worked his way amid
tho stream of pooplo up to tho odgo of
lins dais until ho was within two foot of
tho President.
