no Union of Orr's Rifles.
Abbeville Modln in, August 23d.
Tho animal mooting of tlio Survivors'
Association of Orr's Rogimont of Hilles
met in Seneca la3t week.
Thia regiment was tho Hist ono en
listed in our State "for three years or
the war," and it was named after James
L. Orr, its first commander. Tho regl
moots organized whou tho war began
wore sworn in for only twelve months.
When Orr's Regiment was raised tho
romaneo of tho war had disappeared and
all who enlisted then know that there
was bloody work in storo for thom.
Going to tho war was no frolic at that
timo. A majority who enlisted woro
settled and serious minded mon. Sandy
Springs, in Anderson county, was tho
lirst camp of instruction. Tho annual
meetings have been hold at that place
for twenty-fivo years. Tho chango to
Seneca was made hist year becauso of
tho dilapidated condition of tho old
touts on tho grounds.
Tho Association was formed nt Ander
son in 187:5, when a largo number of sur
vivors assembled to attend tho funci al of
Col. James I.. Orr, who died in St. rotors
burg, Russia. Tho body was brought
li?me and many of tho regiment attended
tho funeral as a mark of respect to tho
memory of their first commander. Tho
next meeting was in Walhalla July 21st,
1875, and after that tho annual meetings
wore hold at tho old campground. Noxt
year tho meeting will bo at Sandy
Springs. Although tho hospitality of
(bo pooplo of Seneca was unbounded
and thoir wolcomo most hearty, th ero
s omcd to bo something lacking among
tho old soldiers and they did not feel ex
actly at homo. So, on motion of lt. Y.
II. Lowery, ibo resolution adopted last
year to moot at Seneca, Anderson and
Abbeville, was reconsidered and the old
plan of mooting at Sandy Springs rovivod
and adopted. This action was bl cpi rod
by a desire to got back to tho old camp
around which so many fond memories
cluster.
Tho custom at those annual meetings
has been to camp out tho first night and
lhere was no departure from this last
week, Tho mooting was held in tho old
fair grounds, about a milo from tho
business part of the town. A number of
substantial buildings aro on tho ground.
They were, cleaned and swept out. Loads
of frosh st raw were hauled in ami tho
U'round Hoot" of tho sleeping apartment
covered SO as to make comfortable and
jasy beds. The veterans hogan to como
in by four o'clock on the afternoon of ,
August I Ith, and wont out to the camp
ground. When night came on at least
io von ty-five veterans wore present, sit
ting around tho camp-tires, recalling tho
l?ast and lighting over tho haltlos of tho
war again. It was evident that tho old ,
soldiers still know how to make coffee,
for a delightful aroma hung over tho
?ami?.
Tho Association was called to order at J
ton A. M., August 15th, by tho President,
?obert R. Hcmphill, and tho proceedings
.vere opened with prayer by Rev. 1). W. ?
[Ilott. Thc minutes of tho last meeting
.vere read by tho Secretary, J. W. Thomp

pressed pleasure at seeing so many sur
vivors present and in such lino physical
condition. The election of officers for
he year then came on. On motion of
Ar. T. McGill, Robert R. Homphill was \

Tillman and the Preachers.
South Carolina has become gomowhat
noted for tho uniqueness of ber political
campaigns. Tho present ono is different
from nil predecessors, and is being fought
ou new lines.
Senator Tillman is the central figure;
maiming, metaphorically speaking, with
a Biblo in ono bund and a whiskey bottle
hem ing tho coat of arms of South Caro
lina and stumped "ohemioally pure," in
tho other, ho invites tho populaco to
drink and quotes scripture to provo that
to uso liquor is not considered immoral
in tho Biblo except in Habakkuk, which
ho declares to bo "obsolete;" aroundht/b
tho samo "wool hat boys" of 1800 and
1802 aro applauding lita sharp thrusts
nt tho ministers; others of his moro seri
ous followers aro moro silont; still oth
ers havo openly turned and aro speaking
agnitrst him, while from a bundi od pul
pits pours such a stream o' denunciation
as lins nevor before boon turned simulta
neously upon tho moat ovil works of tho
Satanic majesty. With scathing tongue
and hitter pon tho proaohors of almost
ovory denomination, particularly tho
Methodists, Baptists and Presbyterians,
havo drawn tho lino of excommunication
around tho porson of tho portly Senator.
Tho gubernatorial contest is tho issue,
tho quest ion being dispensary or prohi
bition. Even tho twolvo cousocutivo
days whon tho avorago maximum tom
poraturo was 100 degrees in tho shade,
could not koop tho Senator off tho stand;
indeed, with tho continued boat ho be
came moro warm in tho uso ol' language
and it is a question whether tho minis
tors kept paco with tho Senator's vocabu
lary. Up-to-dato, howovor, thoy aro
doing fairly well and tho indications aro
that thoy will not ho outclasBod.
Among other things Senator Tillman
dcolared in his spoechos that "of all
things I bato it is tho hypocrite, and I
would not swap places to-day with any
jf tho proaohors for my own chances in
Lho next world."
Ho has done moro, ho declares, for tho
morals of tho peoplo of South Carolina
dian all tho proachors put togothor.
"The preachers and tho old har-koop
jrs havo formed an unholy allianco to
break down tho dispensary. Tho proacli
>rs may bo honest, but thoy aro weak in
Llio upper story (tapping his head.) They
10 not know."
Ile accused somo preachers of distort
ing their text? in ordor to show that
liquor was condemned in tho Bible; ho
aion quotes Paul's ndvico to Timothy to
tako wino. Solomon, ho declared, had
11 von tho samo advico; while tho i ti -
dances of good men Uko Lot and Noah
laving got drunk without reproof or
ninishmcnt aro cited to show that
Irunkenness was not considered a sin.
The miracle of water being turned into
wine by Jesus has been repeatedly re
ferred to as proof, furnished by tho New
Testament, of tho Senator's contentions.
Ministers of tho gospel wero allitera
tive in their attacks on his cause, the
Senator said, and ho might retaliate by
>aying somo peoplo attributed "I). I)."
Lo stand for "Damned Dovils."
Peoplo had threatened to scratch his
mime from tho ticket, ho said, and ho in
vited thom to do so, declared that al
though ho had no opposition for rc-olec
Lion to tho Senate, lie would not accept
tho office if ho did not rcceivo a majority
af tlie votes east. Ho said he expected
to make 20,000 new enemies by his can
vass.
But Senator Tillman has not hold the
monopoly of tho talking. A hundred
sermons and ns many letters to news
papers might ho quoted from, hut hero
uo a few samples:
Hov. (i. W. Gardnor, D. D., editor of
Lho South Carolina Baptist, has been a
?supporter and admirer of Senator Till
man, and has kept, out of tho fight until
this week, when ho attended a mooting
ind heard tho Senator speak. Ile says :
"It was an outrage and wc aro ashamed
that South Carolina ha ?ich a man to
represent her so destitute of reverence;
?> blasphemous. Ho is a far worse man
than his most ardent enemies have ever
branded him. Satan quoted Scripture
lo UV Lord, but we do not boliovo his
Satanic majesty is capable of handling
(rod's word moro perversely or Irrovor
an tl y than Senator Tillman. His advo
cacy of tho liquor trafilo and endorse
ment of tho drinking habit aro unworthy
jf any man and could only emanate from
r man who was lost to all noble purposes.
If is a pity tho young mon of our coun
try aro permitted to listen to such a man.
But we must not bo sovero. Wo pity
Ibis man. May God have mercy on his
?nil. Ile is led captivo at tho will of tho
levil."
Dr. C. S. Gardner, of Greenville, rofer
ing to Tillman's statement that Habak
kuk is obsoleto, says: "Habakkuk did
lot live to see tho timo when a United
States Senator would go about the
?Olintry preaching that tho liquor trafilo
s a benevolent and moral institution.
Ho is either a religious ignominious or a
'Oligious Impostor who trios to bolster
ip liquor trafilo with tho Biblo."
Kev. V. C. Hickson, of Cherokee
ioutity, who attempted to interrogate
(Milman on tho stand and was snubbed
md "sawed olT," says:
"Will tho poople follow Mr. Tillman or
,ho preachers and tho Bible? Tlioro
vas a time whon they would follow
Tillman; has that timo passed!' Tho
'.ord grant that it has. But I want to
ico my people, in Chorokoo, if you think
dr. Tillman knows moro of tho Bible
md of right, of how to live and how to
lie, than I do lol him ho your pastor;
ot him como to pray for you whon yon
anno to die, let him preach your funor
tls when you are dead. I do not. want to
lo lt."
I', IL Kuckor, of Columbia, says:
'With tears of grief, how often have I
?rayed, 'My God, change this man,' for
ivhat a power ho could be, what a multi
ude he could lead to a bright land. But
Cphraim ls joined to his idols. Senator
