several outbreaks of hog cholera in
tho State. Letters ot inquiry re
garding the disease have been re
ceived at this ellice. Questions as
lo how the diseased hogs can best bo
handled and whether it is dangerous
to horses and cattle aro asked. Por
the beticlit of readers concerned, I
will say that hog cholera nearly
always exists in connection with
swine plague. So tli.it an examina
tion ol'the dead carcass shows the
presence of both. rl hoy exist under
about the same conditions and are
both contagious and infectious. In
oilier words, they are catching just
like measles or whooping-cough. So
when once introduced into n com
munity it spreads and often kills
nine-tenths of all the bogs affected.
When tho disease is observed the
owner shouhl at once prepare :t new
pen old iii an open Meld or some
place where no hogs have run that
\< ar. Take all of thc well hogs to
tho new pen. (Jive them access lo
snit, ashes and powdered charcoal

nu nufacturing, recently gavo to the
Charleston Nows lind Courier some
information which is of special inter
est to not a few communities in the
South in which the idea obtains,
moro or less definitely, that this sec
tion may be overdoing tho business
of building cotton mills, and that
they probably had better not add to
the number.
After stating that the cotton ma
chinery manufacturers in tho United
Slates can make only 2,600)000 spin
dles a your, and that about 2,000,000
will probably bo added yearly for tho
next ten years to tho number now in
operation, Mr; Tompkins added :
?'New England has 151,000,000 spin
dles of which 7,000,000 are located
in Massachusetts. Thoro arc now
.?,000,000 spindles in the South. At
tho end of 1000 the South will have
7,000,000 spindles and Now langland
will still ha? J 13,000,000. In Mas
sachusetts new spindles aro being I
put in on tine stuffs only, while tho
old ones are being discontinued on
coarse stuff.
?Old Kngland has 40,000,000 spin
dles ; the South 5,000,000 ; the
United Stales, including tho Middle
States, 20,000,000. At the rate of |
2,000,000 new spindles a year, thc
present rate of increase, ten years
from now thc Tinted States would
have about tho same number of
spindles as Knglnnd. Of these, New
Knglnnd and thc Middle States
would probably bave 20,000,000, all
on linc goods, and tho South 25,000,
00b. In other words, thc United
States in 1010 will have as many
spindles ns Knglnnd, and thc South
will have more spindles than New
Knglnnd and the Middle Stales com
bined."
In other words again, (says the
News and Courier) even if New
Knglnnd bolds its present number of
spindles, so that thc South will not
have to replace a great part of them,
there are slill 20,000,000 new spin

sect ion within the next decade, with
out "crowding" the cotton manufac
turing business in this country or
elsewhere) as there is not the slight
est tear of over-production if we
properly develop our markets, and
wc arc developing them with all our
might, military, diplomatic, commer
cial and otherwise.

somewhere in thc South, no doubt.
The part of wisdom for every town
and city in South Carolina, would
appear to bc to capture as many of]
that number as it can.
